February 4, 2000 I had a massive heart attack. This fact was dismissed by the medical staff in the emergency room. I was 39 years old, wasn't overweight, didn't have diabetes. The truth be told I didn't fit the mold. The media reports of women and heart diease hadn't begun yet. By the time they figured it out, a large part of my heart was damaged.
At first they didn't think I would make it through the first year. I have learned a lot in these last nine years. I have learned that you can live with half a heart. Your heart will adjust and mine remapped to accommodate the double load. This can wear out the working part of the heart faster, they said I might have five years.
I have always been obstinate, persistence, and determined. I know there have been many loved ones I have frustrated with these traits. Don't tell me I have five years, because I will just have to prove you wrong.
I would love to tell you that the last nine years have been easy, but I can't. Every six months I have to visit the cardiologist, and I always wonder what procedure, test, is he going to want to do now. I do get tired faster and easier, I can get frustrated with my low energy.
I learned not to take life for granted and not to sweat the small stuff, to enjoy every day that I am still here. Getting older is a good thing, I have earned every wrinkle and grey hair, I have.
February is the month of hearts and love to many. It means hearts for me as well just for a very different reason.
