Makes my head spin!

No, I think cracking down on illegals is where the attention should be right now. The cost to us is staggering.

The problem with some illegals is they are sent for by wealthy folks who want to use them as slave labor. Promises are made they will be given legal status but that never happens. They are sent to this country and treated like slaves, abused to perform housekeeping, landscaping, child care and other manual labor. In these instances, the money mongering jerks who sent for them should be compelled to pay the legal fees associated with the situation. Unfortunately, often our country has to pick up the tab. The legal fees should be recouped from the people who didn't hire American labor and sent for these illegals with false promises.

On the other hand, if they came on their own, sneaking over borders, they know what they are doing and they are ILLEGAL. That's enough of a burden and expense to our taxpayers without paying for legal fees, too. Illegals are costing this country plenty already and the bottom line is it needs to stop.

Ship them back to wherever they came from!! Sorry, they are here illegally and if they expect to be treated like an American citizen then they need to start paying their own way, pay taxes and contributing back to the US, not mooching off all the taxpayers who work hard for their money.

I say if you do not speak our language and uderstand us and here illigally your backside should go back to where you belong, no questions asked, Why should we keep their backsides up.

Stacey, you have a point. If they were "sent for", we should make the wealthy who employed/enslaved them pay any legal fees.

I also like Diana's suggestion...to just send anyone who is here illegally back. Why should we be spending tax-payer dollars on legal proceedings at all?

Illegals need to be deported , our country is a nation of people who immigrated here. Today we still are a nation of immigrants, but there are laws and without the law we have anarchy. Millions wait patiently to be given their turn to come here, those who skirt the laws need to pay the penalty of deportation. Never mind the fact that our Mexican border is becoming a freaking war zone with drug cartels murdering and running amok along the border.

I have been reading about Obama's changes, and they are bothering me greatly. I didn't expect him to go to such lengths so soon. The international abortion money that Obama now okayed to be put back in "action" was my first surprise. I knew things would change, but didn't expect it so soon.

If they aren't a citizen, we shouldn't be providing lawyers to them out of the taxpayers dollars. There are so many pro bono lawyers out there, so if indeed they get to stay and have a hearing over whether to be deported, let the "bleeding hearts" foot the bill. I don't want to sound callous. But what's wrong is wrong. I think they should be deported right away, maybe with only a few exceptions (although I don't know what they would be).

Illegal is illegal, what's to defend? I would suppose some consideration be given for political asylum seekers with good reason.

I don't grant people rights because of the nation they come from or the citizenship they can claim, I grant people rights because they are people. It doesn't reflect on a poor immigrant (illegal or not) if we send him to court without legal representation. It reflects on us. It says that we don't favor justice. It says that we don't grant others the rights we reserve for ourselves. It makes us look like selfish jerks.

PS: Allison, illegals DO PAY TAXES, both directly and indirectly. Remember sales tax? Remember that tax on gasoline? Remember where the landlord gets the money to pay his property tax? Also, remember that all that money that is withheld for their social security they will never get to claim. That's just a gift to the rest of us.

Not all constitutional rights that apply to citizens also apply to non-citizens, but many of them do. I don't have a problem with that. I think it's a good thing.

Here's a clue. I have a life outside of Gather. I spend time with my hubby at night.

The bothersome part of it is all the law-abiding American citizens who really need legal representation, and go without it, simply because they can't afford it. If there are government-provided lawyers available, they should go to these needy Americans, before any illegal alien gets them.
