Patriarch Kiril, of the Russian Orthodox Church was enthroned as the new leader. It is with the hopes that he will lead a rapprochement with other Christian Churches. Hundreds of dignitaries & thousands of worshippers packed Moscow’s huge central Christ the Saviour Cathedral to see Patriarch Kirill crowned as the 16th Patriarch of Moscow & all Russia.
Kiril is a moderate liberal as opposed to the late Alexi, who was a pedantic & archaic thinker.

I've been following this story on the BBC World Service.
Do you think they'll ever have a Matriarch some day?
However, in the 1990s, when Rome was in discussion with the Anglican Communion about full communion, Rome wanted Canterbury to forbid priests to marry, which no Christian church outside Rome requires or even considers acceptable. Canterbury's refusal and Rome's intransigence on the subject ended the talks, which I find very sad. I don't think Pope Benedict is going to be any more open to married priests, which is likely to impede communion with the Orthodox just as it did wth the Anglicans. Such a pity. The Anglican Communion has entered into communion with some Orthodox groups, so there is hope for communion with the Russians.
Dorinne has some great thoughts there, the move to allow priests to marry would remove many obstacles for the more conservative Anglicans to rejoin with Rome. We already see many Anglicans doing so but the stream could become a flood with some new thought from Rome (and there is a passionate argument over that subject now). The Greek and Russian Orthodox are even closer to us in many ways and it would be great day for Christianity to see such communion again.
I do agree the Pope will not likely do so but he is old and we will see a new one soon I believe.

Wouldn't such unity make Jesus happy!
Svetlana, I'm sorry to hear that Kirill is such a disappointment. Perhaps he will pen his heart to the Lord and be a better leader than you think. We can always pray for him!
