DANCE OF THE CLOWNS
What a sight it was to see, I thought
Standing quietly unnoticed in a shadow -
I watched them in silent awe and disbelief
He, with his painted face, bowed to her
with gestures animated and exaggerated
She, with tossled wig and painted freckles,
curtsied clumsily in return, batting her eyes at him
He extends a hand - she graciously accepts -
and the other hand as well, as they begin to waltz -
Though no music could be heard - not by me at least -
they danced with oversized shoes, they did in perfect form -
a polka waltz like none I’d seen before
I had to clasp my hand upon my mouth
to keep my laughter silenced at this sight
so as not to disturb this dancing duo -
two clowns waltzing to music only they could hear
yet, in all its comedy, it was a beauty to behold
