''The Libyan leader was elected in a closed-door meeting by African heads of state to lead the African Union for a year'', declared a spokesperson for the Habiba Mejri-Sheikh organisation.
It's only for a year right? This is the guy who has "led" Libya since the 1969 coup. That's... 40 years of rule. I suppose we should trust him. He has a great track record of working with the US on resolving complex issues. The guy has been a friend of Israel for many years, and always takes a soft line on the peace process there. Also, he's never been the "principal financier of international terrorism." No US President has ever labeled Libya as a "rogue state." Seriously, this guy seems like a great pick for the AU.
For one thing, how will Gaddafi deal with the situation in Somalia? Darfur? Gaza? This is not the guy we, or anyone, should want in power. What do you think about this?

He may have changed, I don't know. I do know he has killed or co opted all the religious extremists in his country so that's something. He seems to have less to do with the world wide loon movement than before. He has shown little ability to lead even in his own nation so I'm unsure what he has that makes him a good choice for the AU. That the AU needs a strong speaker is obvious but I'm unsure if Qaddafi is that guy. One sure hopes he can do something positive, Africa is quite simply the world's basket case
But yeah, same guy.
