This might be the strangest bit of news that I have picked up on for some time. And that's saying something. Here is a link to the article from Ha'aretz.
In a statement at Ben-Gurion University, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak made some pretty standard political statements. He claimed that his opponents don't know how to run a country, they can't do this, they can't do that. All that normal jazz. What sticks out is that he seems serious about a tunnel that would lead from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.
This would be a 48km, $2-3 million project. The traffic in the tunnel would be controlled by Palestinians, but would remain under Israeli sovereignty. This seems like a terrible idea, and I hope I missed a joke here. While it would enable "freedom of movement" between the two regions, it would also be a deathtrap. And, something about forcing Palestinians to move underground seems wrong.
Just wanted to throw this into the ring. Craziness.
Peace.
