I was watching a fox in the backyard yesterday. The fox was squinting due to the snow and sunshine. Then he opened his eyes, and ran toward something lying in the yard.

What looked like a dead goose, is really a dog toy.

The fact that it was a toy didn't stop him from marking it as his.

I didn't recognize the dog toy, but went over to investigate it. It isn't one of our dog's toys. Not wanting my dog to get a hold of a toy that a fox had peed on. I thought I would just throw it away. I went to pick it up and instead of stuffing, this toy was filled with dead mice. I left the toy and this morning it was gone. Mmm breakfast, I am thinking.

Great photos, Nanina~
He has his way of living just as we have ours. The dead mice might seem gross, but visit a slaughterhouse where humane meat comes from.
The ways of animals are actually quite wonderful.
In fact, I noticed a tennis shoe of unknown origin in the backyard as well. Just one, and more than likely brought here by a fox as well. If they get hungry enough they will eat the leather off of a shoe. This time of year food can be slim for them. They will look forward to next month when the geese will start laying their eggs. They swipe the eggs from the nest, after that they will go after the squirrels, rabbits and garden snakes, with a bird here and there.
You are right he does look less then impressed in that photo. Fox disappointment.
Natalie,
The toy is gone, not sure what took it, but you are right, there are a lot of opportunist around here.
wishing you laughter

What a beautiful creature--even if his/her diet holds no appeal for me--yuck! At least the mice were already dead.
You must have one hell of a telephoto lens--no way you could have gotten that close to her/him.
amazing shots, very clear and a great subject too boot
