This is a song I have always loved and although I am a huge Lennon fan I have to go with Ben E. King on this song.

you left out Jackson Browne, it is a good song, period. Love Benny King's version, but have a soft spot for Lennon!

There's that video that's getting a lot of exposure now of a guy who put it together for 10 years with a lot of different musicians from all over the world intercut from artist to singer to musician. I just saw it partially on ABC the other day. You can access it on the internet: (Play for Change: Stand by Me). Beautifully done!

From these two I would choose Ben E. King, but there is another remake ny Maurice White that I love.

I love the original and John's version. Ben E King was as smooth as moonlight. John was a Beatle, and therefore I give him most love for every breath he ever took. However, in the end, I must tip my hat to John and toss my vote in Bennie's box. John and his mates were pretty good at doing the R & B hits in a style that appealed to the young, white audiences of the day, but in the end, and I'm sure John would agree, the boys from Liverpool were just pretenders on the R & B covers like this one.
