The economy is hitting home more and more everyday. It hurts so bad to watch local business's going under. Families losing their only source of income. Individuals watching long time family owned business's fold. The most recent local business going under is some where I know and love. Peerless mattress and furniture store.
I worked for Peerless Mattress and Furniture for over a year. It is a great working atmosphere. It is a local family owned business. As an employee I was personally treated like family. Many customers have been loyal customer for generations. Most of our customers we knew by name! Peerless is one of the few locally owned and operated companies that make their own mattress's. If you have ever had a Peerless Mattress you could testify that they are the best on the market! I mean the best! We used to get orders from all over the United States for Mattress's!
Peerless provided some of the best customer services available. They were customer friendly .. and employee friendly. I honestly felt at home working at Peerless. So when I opened the local newspaper and saw they are closing their doors for good I cried. My first thought was for all of my friends losing their jobs. My next thought was for the Pemberton family. His family built this business from the ground up. He struggled through good times and bad times. Economic hardships and much much more. I am truly heartbroke to see that the state of the economy today is forcing them to close their doors.
I am saddened and disappointed amoung other emotions. Many of the sales people working at Peerless furniture are well past 'normal' retirement age. They stayed with Peerless out of loyalty and love. I'm just at a loss right now. Fifty more mid michigan workers are now out of a job. What's next?

So many local business's are going under big and small. Its so heart breaking. I thank god everyday I get disability and I get to work too. I worry for so many people ... breaks my heart to see anyone struggling.

I found to be somewhat weird to stroll through a local mall and find most of the smaller retail spaces to be without tenants. And, the majority of businesses still there had very few customers.
Yet, the undesirable retailers like Wal*Mart are still around. It's just not right, but that's the way it is.
