Greece just can't seem to break away from some sort of debilitating nationwide riot. Still shaken by the riots over the slaying of a youth by police, the country now faces continued strike by farmers.
Tractors block entrance at several border checkpoints as workers mill about them. Still, progress has been made in meeting the protestors demands. All of which seem...relatively reasonable. What next for Greece though? Bulgaria had police protests over wages. Could Greece police protest, especially considering their treatment by international and domestic press concerning the death of the 15 yr old boy? Or might it be something more substantial than domestic issues?
They still have quite a row going on with Macedonia, FYROM if you will, concerning the name of the republic. The conflict has recently come to legal blows in international courts. Macedonia has struggled for centuries to gain its independence and it will do anything to retain it now. This might even lead to a conflict between the two nations, although it does seem unlikely. Then again, unlikely things are the norm nowadays.
Thanks for listening, I hope I wasn't too boring.
Peace.

The so called "Republic of Macedonia" was created in 1945 by Joseph Tito, but annexing the South Serbian province of Vardar Banovina.
What rubbish, to suggest is has been "struggling for centuries".
The FYROM has some nerve to claim another countries culture and history as it's own. If anything, FYROM owes a lot to Greece.!
The amount of money Greece throws in that country is amazing. Greece, through it's investments. has created over 20,000 jobs, which is a good thing considering the FYROM has an unemployment rate of 36%.
If the FYROM thinks it's a pathetic issue (the name dispute), it's good to see where it's priorities are: renaming it's airport to ALEXANDER THE GREAT, instead of dealing with it's high unemployment, high inflation or trying to keep it's 26% Albanian minority happy... LOL.. what a joke!, a minority is 2.6% not 26%.
Here is something to ponder:
"The Department has noted with considerable apprehension increasing propaganda rumors and semi-official statements in favor of an autonomous Macedonia emanating from Bulgaria, but also from Yugoslav partisan and other sources with the implication that Greek territory would be included in the projected State. This Government considers talk of "Macedonian Nation", "Macedonian Fatherland", or "Macedonian National Consciousness" to be unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic or political reality, and sees in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece."
Secretary of State E. Stettinius on December 26th 1944

"I believe that Greece is right to object and I agree with Athens. The reason is that I know history, which is not the case with most of the others, including most of the Government and administration in Washington…. The strength of the Greek case is that of history, which I must say."
Henry Kissinger in the annual meeting of Management Centre Europe held in Paris in 1992

Here is what the former president of FYROM (Mr Kiro Gligorov) had to say:
“We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century … we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians.” (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That’s who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia. The ancient Macedonians no longer exist, they had disappeared from history long time ago. Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century (AD).” (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992)

What the F.......
The so called "Republic of Macedonia" was created in 1945 by Joseph Tito of Yugoslav. I find this article very BIAS and offensive to me and the Greek people and must be corrected.
Alexander The Great and the Macedonians are Greek and claim to be Greek and has been Greek for 4000 years read your history books my friends. No country that has been created during the Cold War trying claiming Greek territory and Greek history ever since can take that away from the Greek people.
These FYROM are slavs that arrived into Europe 1000 years after Alexander The Great and have no right to the name Macedonia. One Macedonia Greek and proud...
I'm not really sure what you are getting at with the quotes about Slav Macedonia. If you are trying to imply that a long ago migration negates the possibility of statehood, you should be at a loss for examples to prove this point. If you have some I would be glad to hear and refute them. I don't take kindly to my thoughts being called rubbish, but I do enjoy intelligent debate, which you seem to offer, and I thank you for it.
Peace.

"The FYROM has some nerve to claim another countries culture and history as it's own. If anything, FYROM owes a lot to Greece.!" from John Mazonakis..
it's not about culture or history, it's about covering up a shameful modern-day human rights record. Which Yunanistan is guilty.
btw, your view towards History is a joke..
