This morning I heard of another Minnesota native killed in Iraq, Philip Windorski Jr.
As I look at our map marking regional deaths in Iraq, I have to click and revisit the names and stories behind the icons. Each represents a person, a life. Then I have to wonder what that map would look like filled with the living service people already there, people currently at risk.
Time to check in again: Do you know someone serving in Iraq? What are your fears and hopes for them? I don't think the answers to the second question may be as obvious as we think.
This is an open discussion. You don't have to be from Minnesota to answer, and you're welcome to link to your related Gather articles or other online resources. Your comments may be quoted on the air or on http://minnesota.publicradio.org/your_voice/

(not holdin' out much hope on the hopin' part tho)
If you willingly wage war on an innocent ppl simply because "I was following orders" you are a criminal.
We hanged Nazi's for the very same thing. American's aren't exempt.
Thank you for making your comments. My sorrow cannot be expressed in words. I will read more about your brother, Philip Windorski, Jr..
Iraq is having elections again. The Shia are voting this time. Woman are voting. Girls are going to school. I hope the rest of the Muslim world watches this election.
If you know of a military family here, shovel their walk, mow their yard, babysit their kids, clean their gutters, ask them if you can be of help.
February 10th is another "Serving our Troops" dinner for the families of National Guard people leaving for duty. A great event. It is put on by St Paul CIty Council Member Pat Harris and many St Paul restaurants and St Paul companies. It's a St Paul thing. They could use your help, both with money and to help serve food, clean up, etc. This is a very emotional event. Show your support.

Butchie was my cousin and he was a beautiful person with a strong love for everyone and everything he did, I have known him since childhood and I couldn't tell you a time that he was ever a bad person. I am so proud to be related to him and I only hope that I can raise my 3 boys to be half the man that he was.
I am so sorry for the loss Bruce! It must be so devastating for your family right now!
My family is praying for you, your mom, Scott, and Karin every day.

I will be sure to let my children know that their father, CW3 Philip E. Windorski, Jr. died so that you can have the freedom to spit in their faces.
Mrs. Windorski
I soar above heavens
Majestic and elegant
Untamed flying free
God gave me keen vision
Golden eyes made of steel
Now I Scan the horizon
Search for threats to my country.
From both near and afar.
Poised with great power
To Strike from above
My Black and white feathers
A symbol of strength
A warning to all.
Fear all my sharp beak
My graceful strong wings
Fear all my Strong Talons
Sharpen as razors
Poised ready to strike
Devour any enemy
Who threaten my country
From near lands or afar.
I cry for each hero
Every Guardsman, each Soldier
Every Sailor, each Coastie
Every valiant Marine
From the birth of Columbia
Who so gallantly died!
Protecting my country
In lands near and afar.
You died for my freedom
My right to soar free
To speak without fear
Any words of my choosing
Both here and afar.
Rest now my sweet hero
You’ve passed thy torch on
Rest for eternity
In lands near and afar

I grew up around military all my life and have a deep respect for them and what they do for us. Those that do not should keep their comments to themselves and just remember that if it weren't for out military YOU would not have the freedom to have that opinion.
As for Nunya, I feel nothing but sympathy for your ignorance and gross lack of compassion for those willing to leave their freedoms here in the U.S., their families, to protect even those like yourself, who do not support them in their mission. Even if you don't support them, as an American it is your duty to respect their sacrifice, as well as their families, by keeping ignorant comments to yourself. You should feel nothing but shame, and I pity you and am just grateful that most people, unlike yourself, have basic decency of character and respect for life.
