After Sarah had given birth to Isaac the presence of Hagar and Ishmael displeased her greatly. She had no intention of allowing Ishmael to share in Isaac's inheritance and required Abraham to effect her wishes.
Sarah's Ultimatum
You plead, ‘Don't make me choose.' How dare you weep?
That mongrel's breath pollutes the very air
Our son must breathe. Had I the strength I'd tear
Him limb from scrawny limb. Why should we keep
The issue of a slave? We have an heir
Of purest blood; now you must see the need
To chop and burn the growth of misspent seed.
Despatch him now - or do you cry for her?
She called me barren, dry, a desert waste
And claimed his line would populate the land
But now I call upon the lifeless sand
To swallow them and bring me peace at last.
This land is ours, the birthright of our son -
Would you deny he is the chosen one?
