PLAYING THE SLOTS

an experiment in alliteration using my intials, D. W.

Drowning in depths of despair,

desperately dropping dimes

Damage done,

daintily, dangerously.

Dumb.

Wearily watching wheels whir,

wondering whether winning would

weathered wonder waken.

Worst weekend wish,

we wouldn't win.

I loved the alliteration. I've been teaching my son about it. I love the subject of your poem, I'm a slot fan. I used to use dimes, but now I've stepped down to nickels.

David, this makes me think of the old joke about how the man used to pray to G-d to win the lottery. Every day the man would pray to G-d, "Please let me win the lottery!" The man got discouraged, thinking the G-d was not answering his prayers.

Finally G-d got disgusted, so to speak, and spoke to the man. He said, "If you want to win the lottery, you gotta help me out here! You gotta buy a ticket!"

(Of course you know that I LOVE the slots! And I have a good time at casinos, win lose or draw!)

That is very cool. Years ago my husband who was a coach had a bowl game in Reno. I took $20 to gamble with and played the nickle slots. I won $500 and it was enough to take us home for Christmas. Haven't gambled since...
