Is there such a thing as too many Gather friends???

I recieve requests everyday, and most days I send out some requests also, Many people have rejected requests saying they have too many friends...I dont see it...More friends = more people to share my poems and posts with. More friends also = more wonderful people to recieve great posts, pics and articles from.......If I havent said it already,  I love Gather and all my Gather friends. What is your take on it and how many friends do you have? I have 1024 Gather friends.

I am new to Gather since December 30, 2008. I now have 80 friends. Two weeks ago I only had 40. I get at least 1 request a day and I have made some requests. I am having fun meeting new people, exploring ideas, getting advice and sharing stories, pics and videos with everyone. I agree, you can never have enough friends around.

I'm with you. I have 1042 friends. Usually, the ones who think they have to limit friendships also think they have to visit every single friend on their list every single time they log on. Thankfully (hopefully?), my friends are not expecting that of me. Nor I of them.

I don't have as many, maybe around 450. I do feel bad that I can't get to everyone's writings every day, but I do the best I can. I like having a network of friends though. It's pretty cool to get different points of view from people all over the country.

Wow, I've only been on Gather since November and only have 45 friends, I would love to have more. I have never rejected a request, and have sent out many. I don't think it would be possible to have too many, and boy to do I wish for the day I have over 1000 like you do...of course, that would be so great, because that many more people would see my posts, photos and videos. Right now I'm just trying to always add more. =)

Yes, I think you can have too many. Especially if you get a few that post 10 articles a day. I turned off all of my notifications because I would never be able to keep my inbox cleaned out if I left them on. Some people get really offended if you don't comment on their content frequently too. If you have 1000 connections, how could you ever find time to comment on all of their stuff?

If people are interested in getting Gather cash rewards they need points.
If they are interested in getting points, they need to comment a lot on other people's articles and get a lot of comments on their own.
If they want a lot of comments on their articles or want a lot of articles to comment on, then they need to have a lot of connections.
Anyone who wants points but who turns down a lot of connection requests is only hurting themselves..........

Now...I will admit that I do not have any alerts set up. I learned that the hard way - back when there was a Gather upgrade and a glitch. I was getting no email alerts at all, then - poof - 6,000 arrived withing seconds. And they kept coming. I turned off the alerts and have not used them since.

The more the merrier! Rarely do I have my main page set on posts from groups, but I'm always on posts from friends, the more posts on that page the more I find the time to view. I'm still trying to break 200 and I'm green about people who have more than 1000 friend me please !

You can have to many I found. I started with the New Year and now I use friend groups. It makes it much easier to keep up with friends you Gather with daily.

I almost always accept too, unless the person requesting has NOTHING in his/her profile. I don't think there is such a thing as too many friends because the delete works fine and doesn't take all that long if you just don't have time.

I have just over 300 which surprises me, I do take it slowly and don't aggressivly have them, but appreciate all I have and usually don't turn down. Admittedly I don't come close to checking out all every day, nor do I try. But I do hit all posts that show on my page and intrigue me or those who have been to me I revisit accordingly. Sometimes something happens and we become regulars on each others things, sometimes not, one never knows.. I do view a lot more than what I comment on as when I do comment I lean towards 'long-winded', lol!

I have a little over 200, and I try to view as much as possible. There are some that are not active, but I'm not going to remove them. I have at times removed some that I realized I accepted at an earlier time, and I actually do not read their content. It is not because they don't read my articles or comment. I used to think you could have too many, but not anymore.

I will take all the friends I can get...and try to comment on as many as I can. Some I may end up spending more time with than others, but isn't that the nature of some firendships?

I always accept the friend requests I do view everything even if I don't comment. If you're active it's easy to stay caught up, but since I can only be on at certain times (between classes, homework breaks) I often fall behind.

Friends are good, but there's a point in keeping up with them. You can't expect friends to only look at your content, a friend should return the favor. There is only so much time to do this. I am slowly looking at which people actually share the same interests to become a better friend. It takes time to establish them. I also believe that content finds readers, not all of which will be friends.

I haven't been here that long but I try to add a few friends a day. If I am keeping up with emails well I'll keep doing it. I want to make it around to anyone that posts during the day.

I have around 100 and that is manageable for me.
I have 28 "friends" and it's sometimes hard to keep up on commenting. I'm not really interested in quantity of "friends" and I don't want them for the sake of having them. I could not care less about 'points'. I think it's a good idea to try to comment on "friend's" articles, myself.

I think the more friends the better as far as getting views, but I find myself feeling guilty as there is no way possible to get to everything that your connections post! I have a little over 300 friends and get requests each day as well as when I see a post I like make a request too.

It's so funny that I saw this right after I checked Berf's friends. She's constantly in the margin of my profile page adding friend after friend. She has 116 pages of friends. I just took some time to whittle mine down a bit yesterday because I like to see who's online, and when there are too many my page gets clogged with people with whom I almost never interact. It's really a matter of preference, but I'm always of the mindset of quality vs. quantity.

More friends equals more page views equals more money! I had 1,400 in my network at the beginning of November. I got rid of the dead weight that are no longer active or never visit my posts anyway. I pared things down to 850, but am already back up to around 950 with people, daily, requesting to join my network.

I'm happy with the number of friends I have, and I always welcome more.
Am I able to hit everyone's content? Not always. But I couldn't do that even if I only had ONE friend. With school and everything going on, sometimes i'm away from gather for a week, or even longer.

In the same way, I don't expect my friends to be superman, either. I don't need everyone to return every comment, or comment on every post. Not only is it hard to get to every article, I also know that not everything I post is interesting to everyone on Gather. I post a lot of fashion articles, and I know that's not everyone's interest- I don't expect all of my friends to comment.
If I DID expect all my friends to comment on everything I posted, I'd have almost 400 comments on ALL of my content. And usually I don't break 50. SOMETIMES I'll post a controversial article that gets a lot more, but they're not unique page views, usually... people come back to respond again.

In the end, no, you can't have too many friends, and I don't get why people would think that.

I can understand where some people would feel that they have too many connections. Especially if they feel they have to comment on all posts. I figure since not everyone I'm connected to isn't commenting on every single thing I post then I don't have to comment on every single post over everyone I'm connected too. I do the best that I can and move on.

I don't know if it's a bad thing on Gather, but there was a survey or something that said if you have more than 300 friends on Myspace, you appear desperate. But, Myspace doesn't pay you for page views, so the same theory may not apply here.

I have about 300. I don't approve every single friends request I get. I try to keep up with most of what my connections post. If I'm not interested in what they have to say, there is really no reason to keep them on my list, especially if they don't seem interested in what I have to post either.

Nation, I don't know how you can manage all those imaginary friends! I keep my list at around 100 - 120 because then I feel that I can keep up with most of the people I'm connected with. I'm not interested in being connected with people whose content doesn't interest me at all. If someone requests a connection without writing any sort of message with it, I no longer accept and every now and then I delete people who I haven't had any kind of contact with since connecting with them.

I disagree with friend Marilyn M. here and agree with Moggy, Dorian and Sue T. I do have notifications turned on and I visit as many of my friends' posts as I can, unless the title turns me off. I don't feel that it's fair to accept a friend, then never read their posts. I comment on most posts I read, but if I don't think it has merit I just go on; I don't give lowball ratings. If I get a request and I am not already familiar with their work, I check out their posts and comments to decide whether or not there's a "fit".
I'm not able to be a faithful friend to 1042 Gatherers.

I have just over 270, some of which are promotional accounts I need to trim and just haven't gotten around to yet. I feel I keep up comfortably with around 200-250 and try to stay in that range. I don't try to comment on everything connections post, but I do try to give all the titles a look and read anything I have even a remote interest in. I read a lot more than I comment, and a lot more than I post. I have some connections I have a closer rapport with and do try to read everything they post and go by their photos and videos now and then. I share the feeling that it's not fair to accept/ask for more than I can reasonably keep up with.

I don't think you can have too many really, I like diversity. It does make it harder to keep up with everybody, but I think most people "get it"/understand if you've been here a while.
I think I have about 300+, but some are not active. That reminds me, my resolution was to go through them and narrow it down if they haven't logged on in quite some time. Oh well, LOL. Take care.

Depends on what they post/if they stay in touch. I have less than you but it can be a full time job top give them all any justice to their postings. I do eventually weed out those who don't reciprocate.

Yes, it is possible to have too many connections. I have my notifications turned off except for a few.

I will be weeding shortly. I want to actually be able to find the interesting stuff in my feeds... not have to search for it.

I have 320. I agree with you. I would never turn anyone away. I would only delete them if they became annoying or rude. On Gather as well as in real life, I believe I need all the friends I can get.

I have over 600 and some people say the more the merrier. I don't mind having a lot of friends but it does take a lot of time to give each one a lot of attention. My mailbox works overtime but I try to keep up. If they feel I don't give them enough attention they are free to disconnect. Would you send out a thousand Christmas cards? Maybe some people do. I don't know but it sure is nice to read the articles and look at the pictures.
