How Do You Know God Didn't Chose Obama

January 24, 2009 04:47 PM EST
views: 255 | rating: 7.8/10 (23 votes) | comments: 125

I don't believe in the Christian god but as I roam around gather I see thread after thread by self proclaimed Christians on how President Obama will ruin this country and bring it to the brink of godlessness and fire and brimstone will reign on us.

So my question is:  How do you know God didn't make it possible for Obama to be elected?

Obama is mixed race.  And god supposedly loves and made everyone.  Since caucasians and africans are 2 of the most predominent races doesn't it stand to reason that god may have chosen a person with those qualifications in an effort to start to bring together all the races of the world?

Obama is the people's president.  God is the god of the people who chose to believe in him not the big business'.

Obama was the first president in history to mention the Muslims in his innaguration address.

If you read the Koran it recognized Jesus as a prophet and I doubt very much whether Jesus would mind sharing the spot light with Allah.

If I chose to believe in the Christian God, I would have to believe that He chose Obama seeing as how he's supposed to be all powerful and all.

I think Obama is certainly more Christ-like than some past presidents.
He is a unifier, not a divider of people. He harbors no ill-will towards anyone, just looks to give people the respect that all people deserve. Hey, he even mentioned the likes of you in his inauguration address.

Andrea thats my thoughts to. God and the rest of the planet realized that what we were doing and who we elected only brought out country to the frightful place it is today so we elected a person that wasnt the "norm"

Jim no worries I am hoping that doesnt happen if it does I will just take down the thread.

All things are possible through Jesus Christ, who strengthens us, Lori. God created us with a free will, but He does not interfere with our use of that free will. Obama is one of God's children, as are we all.

Obama exercised his free will by making a choice to run for president. Obama was elected by people who used their free will to vote for him. He is choosing issues to prioritize, using his free will.

Is Obama a Heaven sent blessing, a scourge to mankind, the anti-Christ or something else entirely? These and other questions will be answered in time. Stay tuned and pray.

I have not yet seen Obama as a unifier. This campaign was the most divisive, bitter presidential campaign I have ever experienced. So far, I don't see unity. I am hoping and praying for it, though.

Jan again I dont believe but I appreciate your reasonable comment.

The reason I thought of this.

I was reading another thread yesterday and on it the person related this story.

A couple were caught in a flood and they eventually had to move to the roof of their house. A neighbor came by with a boat and offered to take them to safety. The couple replied that they were waiting for God to save them.

The next day a helicopter came and offered to take them to safety. The couple again declined saying they were waiting for god to save them.

On the 3rd day the flood worsened and they were being pulled under the current to a sure death. The wife screamed out to god why had he forsaken them and not helped them.

Whereas god answered. I did try and help you. First I sent you neighbor with a boat and you refused.

Then I sent a helicopter to you.

Lori, no matter if he was "chosen" by their God or not. there are those people who will hate and vilify him just on principle (or the lack there of!)

I missed the Inaugural address on Tuesday but got to hear it in it's entirety (except for phone interruptions... I HATE being on call!) and was heartened by his positive, inclusive reference to Muslims and us "non believers".
There's hope for this world yet if we can only keep on the right track...

Um, Lori, that flood story is just an old joke. God does answer prayers, however.

Peter, I don't actually have a party preference, although I am a Christian. Do you think that no Christians vote Democratic? If that were the case, no Democrat could hold public office.

I think that Obama was destined to be President. He has the ability to be a unifier. He is calm, stable and does not allow his ego or emotions to dictate his actions. When John McCain was enraged with a red face and clenched teeth, Obama was calm and steady and keeping a sense of humor. This man is cool under pressure. He also is trying to take the high road. He has already signed off on legislation to disallow any congressional representatives to accept gifts from lobbyists. He will be criticized no matter what he does, but I believe he has the best interests of this country at heart and will walk the talk as very few other Presidents have done.

I don't believe God would choose a man who belives that partial birth abortion. I don't believe that God would choose a man who wants people to rely totally on the government and not on themselves and on God.

Glad you asked.

Lori, God answers prayers in many ways. Sometimes people do hear the voice of God and that does not make them crazy. I heard God the first time when I was only a child. Perhaps that's why the Bible tells us that we're supposed to become like children...because they are so much more open to God.

As an adult, I've felt his strong arms around me when there was no one else to hold me.

God often sends us to passages in his Word to read to help us through problems. He sends people to us in answer to prayers, sometimes when they come they don't even know why...just that they felt God's leading. God can answer, yes, no or wait.

Marilyn Obama believes in letting people make their own decisions when it comes to abortion and other issues. How do you figure he wants us all to rely on the government for everything...that statement is just assinine.

"How Do You Know God Didn't Chose Obama" [?]

Well, one can't know such things, with certainty. But, one ought to realize, I think, that God chooses people for various reasons, not just because He approves of this or that thing they say or do. He chooses folks He don't approve of too, for various purposes. Allowing folks to choose, is also something He might do, if that choice suited His plans and intentions.

(He can work with us . . . that's not the question, really  ; )

Marilyn: You are misconstruing Obama's vote and reasoning on partial birth abortions.

"On an issue like partial birth abortion, I strongly believe that the state can properly restrict late-term abortions. I have said so repeatedly. All I've said is we should have a provision to protect the health of the mother, and many of the bills that came before me didn't have that.

Part of the reason they didn't have it was purposeful, because those who are opposed to abortion have a moral calling to try to oppose what they think is immoral. Oftentimes what they were trying to do was to polarize the debate and make it more difficult for people, so that they could try to bring an end to abortions overall." ~ Barack Obama

Interesting question. I sometimes heard Republican Christians claim that God was leading George Bush. Sarah Palin claimed that the Iraq war was the will of God. So if you believe that God chose the former president and imposed his will then why would you think he suddenly stopped and left you in the hands of all of the crazy marxist, terrorist, liberal democrats?

My personal opinion is that God allows us our free will and when we go to the ballot box and push the button or check the box we deserve what we get. I don't blame God for eight years of George Bush.

I know God didn't choose Obama because I saw the Flying Spaghetti Monster reach out of the sky touch my tv with his noodley appendage when I was watching Obama deliver his speech at the 2004 DNC. At that moment I KNEW the man on tv who was stirring my consciousness with his powerful words was going to be my President.

Now prove to me that didn't happen. Pastafarians know the truth.

19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

Lori,

Don't forget the

"IT IS WRITTEN" test, either.

True Believers in God, espousing God will not come speaking of their OWN beliefs --

NO, NO, NO, NO!

They know that their opinions and beliefs (when they say they are speaking for God),
MEAN NOTHING!

True Believers should always provide consistent, sound reference for what they say -- references that flow with entirety of the Bible and not anything taken out of context. It is very easy to take scripture out of context:

Ex: "Judas hanged himself."
"Do thou likewise."

Well, I consider myself a Christian-I just don't talk about it, or think that it is my business to tell other people what they should think or believe. I don't know if I would say God selected Obama, but I certainly think God created him, and I think suggesting he is going to ruin the country or the world is crazy. People who claim to be Christians, and spew hate towards anyone, politicians, gays etc. are not what I personally consider to be living a Christian life.

Those Christians just don't know how to recruit. If they would claim Barack Obama, some of us who think they are totally off the wall might actually reconsider. When they do nothing but bad mouth the most ethical, intelligent, caring man we've seen in our lifetimes - they shoot themselves (and their religion) in the foot.

This discussion is based on the false premise that the people who invoke God are christians ... just because they say so.
If God allowed Bush it was to prepare us for Obama.
Bush era showed how easy it can be to loose our freedom and Obama teaches us we have to work hard to preserve it.

Even more. Signed orders to end torture, close the Gitmo, review policies Booshie put in place...freeze some of the Bushie stuff pending review, and lift restrictions that prevent federal support of clinics that offer birth control, including abortion....and allowed Americans to reclaim pride and breathe easier after 8 yrs. of being raped by the GOP, humiliated by policies any Christian would condemn...and all of these being done in our name and paid for by children as yet unborn.

Untrue. The loud mouthed ones ones claimed that they believed in Booshie. True Christians could not.

" if you cant talk to him how do you know he did the prayer answering and it wasnt just a coincedence. "

Beats me. Some call it faith, some call it fate. We're allowed to wonder about stuff like that in our country. I'm grateful for that.

I like the idea of unity, yet our country is free and is all about questioning, protesting, free speech and respect for those who are not like us and who do not share our opinions and values. If all socialists were silenced or all Christians, all Jews, or all of any group(s), for the purpose of unity, would we still be a free country?

"Professed doesn't equal "true", Doyle ;-)"

Nor does it negate "true". Professed means avowed, acknowledged or openly avowed beliefs or opinions. That said, at least some "true" Christians are also professed Christians. Blanket statements about professed Christians in the context herein used are, by necessity, inaccurate. :o)

Great article and many Christian conservatives talk to God everyday and know his will or so they say. I honestly feel the Bushies have messed up America for decades and we need someone right now to start steering us back on course and more of the same isn't the answer.

Lori you are, of course, right on target.

Marilyn - Google partial birth abortions. Do a little research. You spout off all the time with misinformation that you've been spoonfed by the Amercian Unfamily Association.

Good advice, Sharon. I can't believe that people who repeat misinformation daily and aren't even embarrassed, when they know we can all Google and find the information immediately. It's unreal - as though they have no pride.

None of us know what the end result will be but Obama knows and acknowledges religions besides his own, he knows and acknowledges cultures besides his own, he tries to see things from many perspectives. Most just hear him say the word muslim and look for a school desk to hide beneath. I agree that God doesn't make all our decisions for us but hopefully God gave us the wisdom to make the right choice. As for the partial birth abortion issue the Illinois State medical society also opposed the bill because it was redundant and could've negatively affected the doctor patient relationship. Also his whole message all along has been about empowering people to achieve greater goals and he also said innumerable times we can't help you if you won't help yourself.

This is how I know God would NOT chose Barack Obama. One of the first things he did in office was start killing babies:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Friday will lift restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, reversing a policy of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush, an administration official said.

Lori, I feel that this is a topic you might wish to investigate further. To understand God's view on government, you would be better served to read scripture than observe the actions of flawed people (usually making honest mistakes). See Romans 13, for example:

"Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience."

However, this does not mean that one can go evil just because the law says it is permissible. Jesus said himself when on Earth: "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." (Matt 22:21)

Also, just because God selected a ruler does not mean that everything that ruler does is just. God condemns king after king in the Old Testament for deeds such as erecting idols in the temple, murder, and greed.

However, I would like to note that correcting a leader is not rebellion, especially if he also claims to be a believer. Those who have not found Christ often quote the scripture that says, "Do not judge, or you will be judged (Matt. 7)." This is not true in the instance of a believer, who must answer to those in the church. "What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. (1 Cor 5:12)" Since the President claims to be a believer, I feel that it is appropriate to correct him in manners of which God is concerned.

Stephen E.,

One must certainly give you credit for doing what so many do NOT do: quoting scripture which is appropriate to the article content. While I would love to comment on what you quoted, I won't. A Biblical discussion isn't appropriate here. Suffice to say, that maybe others shall follow your lead.

Plus, I need not tell you about the parable of the sheep and the goats, and/or
the wheat and the chaff -- both parables basically the same thing.

Each one deals with COUNTERFEIT BELIEVERS, who appear to the world to be of God, but they are anything but so.

I do not know much about chaff. Apparently "chaff" so closely resembles wheat that it cannot be distinguished from wheat until the time of harvest, and that is when it is separated and burned. Jesus/Yeshua uses this example to say that the COUNTERFEIT BELIEVERS shall remain in the Church until a certain time, and then they shall be REMOVED, just like the chaff, and burned as they are not wheat.

I shall say a few other things, again, not directed at you, Stephen:

9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

10And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

~~Revelation 12:9-10

and this one,

21He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,

22Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

23Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.
~~I Chronicles 16: 21-23

(and my most favorite Rock SuperStar of ALL time, King David, repeated this in the Psalms, Psalm 105:15. It is the reason that, even when King Saul was doing everything possible to KILL David, that David showed King Saul (and his descendants the utmost honour and respect!

David knew Saul wanted him dead. David was a fugitive. But, David also knew that Saul had been the "anointed" of God, and above all else, David respected that! God had called Saul to be King, and despite the fact that God now wanted David as King, David still honoured the fact that Saul had been anointed King.

How many people would spare the life of a man you KNEW was bent on MURDERING you? David did. He was right there, could have killed him, and taken HIS rightful place as King, and yet, David didn't do it. Instead he warned Saul about his incompetent guards -- that they weren't keeping adequate watch over "Saul the King".)
________________________________________________________

Like it or not, in the Biblical sense of what Daniel 2:21 states, President Barack Obama is the equivalent of what that verse would consider, a "king".

President Obama professes to be a Believer. From ALL that I have seen he not only professes it, he lives it, too.

I added the scripture from Revelation because it indicates just WHO "accuses" the Brethren. In the Gospel of John, Jesus/Yeshua called humans,

the sons of their father the devil

rather than

the sons of God

So Jesus himself establishes the precedent that Satan has human seed. Revelation simply identifies that human seed further as those who "accuse the brethren" (and may I include us SISTAs, as well.)

Therefore, if President Obama is one of the brethren (and it doesn't matter if he is in error),
and someone accuses him (in particular, one who claims to be a Believer), you have clearly identified yourself as Satan's seed, for the Bible doesn't lie; you do.

Furthermore, Daniel 2:21. God chose him. You mock God's choice -- God's anointed. No human need see your heart; God sees your heart, and it were better for YOU, if it were only humanity that saw your heart. As King David said, he would rather the punishment of humanity any ole day, than the punishment of God. Jehovah is a SUPERBAD Mamma Jamma and you do NOT, repeat do NOT want to start messing with Him/Her by "touching His/Her anointed and doing His/Her prophets harm."

I agree 100, 000% with King David. Oh Brother, I do so agree. It's why I have no problem speaking to some of these people the way I do. It's obvious they do NOT come in the name of the Lord; I have NOTHING to fear from them. But, if they did, I would be walking on eggshells with them; I fear God, just as David did. That being said, it is best to ignore most of their rantings, for

it is written,

7 Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.

8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

~~Proverbs of King Solomon 14-7-8

Peter,

Sorry, I missed your comment. I was gone when you asked,

" How do you find scripture for bigotry ???"

Better for a Biblical scholar or a Jewish student/scholar, better familiar with the history and/or tradition to answer. Here's mine:

Bigotry existed, but not in the same way as today. For certain, there was a distinction between the circumcised, and the uncircumcised. I would hardly call it bigotry, though. It was more a necessity, for every women's desire -- the desire of women was to be the mother of the promised Messiah. Also, the uncircumcised were seen to be unclean. Let's face it, there was some truth to that, as you look back through the historical record regarding laws of cleanliness, and why Jewish people were sometimes persecuted as being witches and devils. Science didn't learn about germs until what? 1890. But the Jewish laws of cleanliness kept them from contracting so many diseases that plagued -- literally plagued -- others, that people's superstititions, hatreds, bigotries, etc. took over, and jumped to incorrect conclusions about the descendents of Israel.

The prejudices back then did NOT have to do with the colour of one's skin. King David's fling with Bathsheba. I ain't saying nothing, but just dissect the name, "Bathsheba", and then YOU tell me just what "colour" you think "Bathsheba" was. I'll help you out a leeetle bit. "Bath" means "house" or "house of".

Mr. King Solomon was rather a chip off of Daddy's block, wasn't he? Fooling around with the Queen of Sheba.

Same thing with Moses. We KNOW what colour Zipporah was, don't we.

I'll even add myself to the mix, that even today, my friends from Israel kept talking about my beauty. When one wanted to drag me back to Israel as his wife (those Brothas don't waste any time, do they!), it wasn't about "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" That wasn't even in the equation. It was rather that I must convert to Judaism, and spend much time with his mother in order to learn how to be a good Jewish wife. SHOCKING! I nearly went into coronary arrest! I shall make no further comment, other than to say that you see there was NO BIGOTRY there, and the "bigotry" issue does not seem to be the same Biblical bigotry as it is in Western/Colonial civilization.

Even the Sodom and Gomorrah story has been misunderstood. Many would have you to believe that it is about homosexuality, and sodomy, when I believe the cities were really destroyed due to greed, and corruption. But, people must always find SOMEBODY to hate on, don't they. However, that is another story for another day.

To answer your question, though Peter. To find scriptures on racial bigotry, I cannot. To locate scriptures on cultural, and/or maybe social, national separation (not really bigotry, though, yes.)
