How do i know which online retail sites are save????

Morning all, i am trying to get some information and tips on online shopping, i have been shopping online for a long time and i have never worried about being save when online shopping. 

This morning hubby got home and told me, that one of his coworkers had made an online purchase, he had ordered a pair of shoes on this website, the next time he checked his bank account he seen, that someone had made a purchase on the same website with his credit card for a total of 700$ !!!!!!!!!! He called his bank but they said the can not do anything about it!!!! 

Well thats all the info hubby had on this coworkers problem.

Now i am wondering how did this happen>?????? Did someone hack his computer while he made the purchase????

How do i know when i buy something online that cc info is save?

the only thing i know to look for https when i type in my info. but is there anything else i should look for, or how do i know what sites to avoid>>?????

Just yesterday i made a purchase and i did not even look to see if there was the "https" in my website line....

I am trying to get as many tips or info as possible, what do you look for when you shop online, what sites do you like and what sites do you avoid????

At checkout sites that are secured will say they are secure. If it does not say that then either go to the sites FAQ's to see if it is secure, if nothing indicates that it is I would not shop there.

You have to be very careful shopping online. If its not a secure or trustworthy site, don't shop from them.

i don't know beate but i got an email saying about the https, that it is a safe site if it has this too. i have never ever saw this when i shopped on line they usually have a lock and say they are a secure site or transaction

I only shop from well known, established retailers online.. that's it. I don't use my bank information for any site that I haven't heard of. Make sure you do your research on the company before making a purchase.... always use secure checkouts! but sometimes even those are just fake.... if you haven't heard of the retailer, don't purchase!

That's a load of total crap. There is ALWAYS something that can be done. My mom had that happen at walmart. Where she shopped IN PERSON. And the bank took the charge off. It can be done. You just need to call and talk to someone less incompetent.

They can revere the charges. you just have to put a major fight.
and make sure that when s hopping online that they are secure. they should have a symbol if not then dont shop there

I find it hard to believe his bank was no help - either he got a hold of someone who had no clue or there's more to his story.

I agree, something can be done, especially when it comes to debit or credit cards.

As for what sites to use, I generally go for sites that are associated with real life stores that I have shopped at. I also go for online stores that I have heard good things about by other users. And, there are many different sites you can go to read reviews by other shoppers, too.

like i said, i just shared what my husband told me this morning, and what his coworker told him. i think the bank might have not been able to help, if it was a pending charge. i had this happen to myself, something was charged and i did not make that purchase, but since the charge made was still pending, the bank could not help until the charge was completed, then they refunded my money.

I'm lucky, I have a credit card that has "virtual credit card" when I go to check out after buying something on line. It gives a completely different credit card number each time which is linked to my credit card. It can not be used more that once. It pops up when I go to the check out page, I log on, it fills in the information on the page and when I close it the number is no longer any good for any other purchases. You may want to see if your credit card has this capability.

I really don't understand why nothing can be done about it. Credit cards have a $50 minimum on them usually when something like that happens.

Yes, the bank can do something about it. Your husband's coworker doesn't sound as though (s)he knows what (s)he is talking about.

As to shopping online, it isn't that difficult to find plenty of legitimate sites at which to shop.

I do a lot of shopping online, but must admit that I don't always pay attenton to security and such. So far I've been very lucky.

With most CC purchases you are only liable for $50 or less of any legitimately fraudlent charges---if any at all.
You just have to file a dispute.
