One of My Pet Peeves

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people mispronounce words or names that they have heard a hundred times.

For example, I know a lady that pronounces our new President's name this way ...

BAR  (like a beer joint) ACK (with a short a sound)

O BAM (like BamBam from Flintstone's) A

 

I mean, come on, it's not like she hasn't heard his name said over and over every day for the last year or more!

Ok, I feel better. Thanks for letting me rant.

My mother inlaw use to always say Walmarts it is walmart not plural.

That drives me absolutely insane. I studied speech for years (I was in broadcasting) and perfected a Nebraska accent (no regional affectation). Correct pronounciation is an absolute must (including foreign words).

Everyone in my family absolutely mauls the pronunciation of names and it drives me crazy! I feel better you feel the same way.

I am doing better at not getting annoyed about this, probably because I work with alot of different nationalities. It happens so often now that understand what they're saying just fine most of the time. I try to just let it slip past my ears, but there are times I just suffer in silence. On the other hand, there was was a guy I used to work with that said 'brefist' for breakfast and that drove me nuts!

i believe this lady does it on purpose, just to try to get people to correct her, so she has something to argue about. i have no problem with "redneck" speech. i am guilty of that myself, or those with accents. it's when someone does it on purpose that it drives my crazy.

It doesn't bother me much except when I hear one of the local "talking heads" mispronounce words on the local news. I don't expect them to have perfect accents, but they should at least not get the names completely wrong. I admit to yelling unflattering things to the TV when those people are on. ;-)

I just commented on a Youtuve video, and Obama's name came up. I clicked on the "audio preview" to listen to my comment, and a very Stephen Hawking type of voice came up and pronounced it "BARack O BAMa" LOL Dang computers!

Right now I'm listening to some music by Ivo Robic, a favourite Croatian singer of mine. Oh do I ever get peeved when someone pronounces his name Eye-vo Robik. It's pronounced Eevo Robich.

BTW, I left a comment and did the "auto preview" again on Youtube, and it said that I was a fan of Eye-vo Robik." I think my computer needs speech lessons.

That really isn't any worse than those who choose to skip using the spell check or insist upon typing in "text message" speak... even when not text messaging.

I totally understand. Some people will still spell my name incorrectly...even after I spell it for them. LOL Or they will pronounce my name like this... Treessa and some will even try to spell that way too! LOL
