I woke up at 2:00 in the morning. I tried to get back to sleep, and tossed and turned for a couple of hours, finally I just decided to gt up and do some Gathering. I think I am just about tired enough to try to get at least an hour of sleep bofre the family gets me up.
As I wrote last night my son was chosen to be in the spelling bee at his school. 40 students are chosen out of 900 something students at the school so it was an honor for him to be there, especially since he is only in 6th grade.
So we show up for the spelling bee, and he goes to sign in. They let him choose his spot and what does my son do? He chooses to go first. Now he has never done a Spelling Bee before, so has no experience at this yet he chooses to go first. Unfortunately I did not hear him doing this, if I had I would have told him not to do that.
The Spelling Bee starts and my son is the first one to go, and is full of nervous energy. He is given his word chocolate. I was feeling good about this. Chocolate is a pretty easy word to spell. Then he begins, "Chocolate Ch Cho, Chocolate." He actually spelled the word correctly but because he said Cho he was given and incorrect. That was just nerves and lack of experience, of course he also giggled. I think if he had gone later in the round in stead of first he would have had a better idea what to do, since he would have got to see other kids doing it, and he would have realized that the over all tone of the competition was not lively but quiet and serious.
The kid that won the whole thing was amazing, there was a long head to head match up at the end, it was pretty interesting to watch. The kid who won this year also won last year.
I am sure if my son makes it next year, he will take it a little more serious, and will know what to expect once he gets to the actual contest.
