I find the godlike worship of Obama most interesting and familiar at the same time. It reminds me of when Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa.
The disgrace of apartheid legislation is a stain on the history of the country. However, it is significant to note, that wherever Europeans have withdrawn from power in any African country there has been a moment or two of euphoria followed by third world self-serving, abysmal crime levels, a total cessation of industrialization and a return to voodoo. It is as if the infrastructure left behind by the European is never improved upon and barely maintained.
A few despots rise, live and leech for a time and are replaced by others who do the same and worse. I have thought long and hard about this over many years in an attempt to understand why.
In the days of pre- and post-apartheid, many international musicians, actors and ambitious African-Americans (and very loud politicians) gave their holy blessing to the perceived-to-be downtrodden-by-the-white-man, along with overweight, hairy lipped, tie-dyed women and skinny men prone-to-red philosophers couched in university establishments. Oh, and many Jesuit priests and their followers bringing bread, weapons and methods for overthrowing of established forums were very active in stirring up the populace. Mixed into this were people of the white race who absolutely abhorred apartheid and did not think legislation against any nation based on the color of their skin was at all tolerable. They believed, as did I, that it depended on the "content of their character".
America chose to involve themselves in South African affairs as a means to promote political agendas within the USA all mixed in with a huge dose of internal guilt for the slavery of their own past as well as the fashion statement of the 80's.
At any one time, there have only ever been 4 million Euro-Africans in South Africa as compared to 40 million Africans. Protestant churches were bombed along with restaurants. Nobody cared because the worshipers were white. News media played coverage abroad of 'bodies' lying all over the parks in Johannesburg declaring that they had been murdered by apartheid police. I invite you to have the courage to go to those same parks today and see precisely the same scene: unemployed Africans sleeping in public places. It was a lie presented to the American people to further flame the fires of hate against the minority Euro-Africans. This misrepresentation in no way assuages the dreadful things done to the indigenous tribes by consuming white powers - subjugation, exploitation is abhorrent in all its forms.
Since the demolition of apartheid billions of dollars have been poured into the economy (and just as quickly stolen), infrastructures run by the government are teetering on the brink of collapse, most of the police are absolutely corrupt, poverty has increased, farmers, elderly women, young women, men of all ages have been tortured and murdered and no business is allowed to exist without blacks being the majority shareholders. Infant murder, rape and barbaric behavior are an every day occurrence. Nobody cries out to aid the struggling average hard working citizenry. Following black rule schools, clinics and hospitals were built by foreign aid and just as quickly pillaged and destroyed.
Where is your outrage now, America?
This is why America will be different: there is a majority population with a committed passion for development, first world tools, European infrastructures and a strong Christian base. Barbarity will not be tolerated. Pillaging has a shorter lifespan. The African Americans will no longer have a reason to resent the Euro-Americans and now success or failure depends solely 'on the content of their character'.
Footnote after watching the inauguration: If I do not believe and trust in the true spirit of America, then what? I have high hopes. America is the only hope for Light for true growth, kindness, democracy and there is no greater country I know of that can actually pull this off. It is a place to treasure.
Perhaps President Obama will lead us into a better way to be civilized. I believe he is inspirational enough to do so and that he aspires to be a fair and just president who cannot discriminate because he is The United Nations. Abe Lincoln is one of my heroes and if President admires this great man then indeed America will raise her glorious flag high in the skies once again - for all the right reasons.
As for me, I am ready to pull in the belt, put my back into work and keep adding to the well of hope.
P.S. I have deleted a paragraph in this piece at the 'offence' it caused the University of Philadelphia and at the request of Mary Ann of Gather.

What planet did you say you were from?
Don't denigrate yourself, you still look great to me!
I'm not surprised that post colonial Africa hasn't done well. Europeans made little effort to create an educated population of people who believed themselves to be first class citizens.
Africa has an entire continent of raw materials which can be used to educate itself. Why does the white man need to provide Africa with HIS own European education system to be considered humane ? Why can't they educate themselves ?
That, Chris, is the big question! Why can't the Africans use their own resources and generate a spirit of resourcefulness, hard work, honesty?
