I Need to Lose Weight. Do You?

January 19, 2009 08:22 PM EST

Greetings folks - if the answer is yes, then I invite you to a challenge.  Let's try to lose ten pounds.  I would like to do this by March 21.  Since I don't believe in diet pills or anything like that, I plan to do this naturally.  This means that we would have to lose a little over one pound a week until then.

This isn't for vanity.  It's for health.  I am going to do it anyway but it would be nice to compare notes with others.  I am 5'2 and weight 148.5 pounds.  Basically, I am a vegetarian and I walk a half an hour a day uphill.  My main problem has been drinking wine every single night.  Now, I plan to only drink a couple of glasses on weekends.  I might cheat but if I do, then I have to walk another 15 minutes.

This isn't rocket science, it's this simple.  It takes approximately 3,500 calories to make a pound.  I am also going to be testing my acid/alkaline content.  An over-acidic body holds more weight.  It's another reason to cut back on my wine which in turn will cut the snacking.

Of course, many folks want to lose more than ten pounds but let's see what works for the first ten pounds and go from there.  Let's feel a little lighter and shed problems while we shed pounds.  Ok, anyone want to go for it with me?  Salud

Losing a pound a week is a piece of cake. Oops, sorry...no piece of cake for you! You're on a diet. I lost 250 pounds in abut 75 weeks...a little over three pounds a week...half a pound a day. I've pretty much been able to keep it off, so I really don't need to diet at 6'4 and 185-190 pounds. I loved to eat and drink, but if I could do that; anyone could lose 10 pounds in almost no time. I'll bet if you stuck to your guns, you could lose 10 pounds in a month...more by the start of spring.

Rob, I admire you for doing that - however, it's beyond comparing percentage of weight in this case - you lost a massive amount - no, I like to stick to ten pounds at a time. The healthy way is the slow way.
Sue, I may start a group then - cause if you're in - it will be fun. I'll work with you Ok. Now, stand up - yes, girl stand up where you are - roll your shoulders back ten times, lift your arms up above your head and stretch. After a while I want you to try touching your toes. Every day I will bug you to move. You can walk in place - start by lifting your legs in place - ten times each - that's a start! You can tell me how much you weight - I'll guess it's probably 185. Am I right? Doesn't matter - ten pounds will make a difference. Salud

Heather - I have to say that I have a firm ass but if you have a jelly butt - you stand there - right now - stand straight and squeeze your butt together - do this ten times holding for the count of ten each time. Start and see how that feels!!! We'll all be looking good! Salud

Well, I have to say, it's not my butt, it's my gut! Both times when I went in to have my kids I weighed in at 195 with my son and 200 even with my daughter. Yes, I was enormously huge!!!!! I have always felt like sit-ups don't help me.

Sue, make a chart with your weight on it - and weigh every single day at same time. I plan to soak in epsom salts tonight - and drink lots of water - lots of that extra weight is toxins and old crap. Salud

Actually, I didn't really try after I had my son. After my daughter, I think it was a lot of running around here and there. We would always walk every night at the walking track though. My daughter and I still walk here, but it's extremely different. Huge hilly, curvy roads. An 1- 1 1/2 is quite a workout!

Melinda - you're young so if you just get rid of the soda habit - I bet ten pounds will fall off quickly - I've had personal trainers - really good ones and they are wonderful if you gel with them - sometimes personalities clash. Stop the sugar for sure - try eating carob and plain water - ok good - now I have to think of a name for this group - any ideas? Salud

yes, if you start walking again, Heather, it may help you. Let's connect a problem with every pound and try to lose that problem while we lose that pound! Salud

10 pounds sounds GOOD, Mariana ... I'm 5'7"... but my weight shall remain a deep, dark secret ... I used to walk 3 miles a day ... did it for 15 years. Then I injured my knee. That slowed me down. Had a knee replacement last fall ... now my other knee is giving me trouble ... but 10 pounds would be wonderful ...

I need to lose a little weight for my daughter's wedding in June.

But, sooner than that, my oldest daughter wants me to climb Mt. Hood with her this Spring because I climbed it 27 years ago! Getting ready for that should get me in shape for the wedding!

Great Laura - I totally understand that - I'm fine with my looks but will be finer when I shed the pounds along with the problems that come with it - lack of energy, too many toxins from the wine, stress on heart and bones. I'm 59 so now is the time to care for my bones for sure. Good luck, Laura! Salud

Hello Mariana! I completed day 2 of Curves. My hubby got a membership for me for Christmas. Today my sister went with me. In the past when we went to Curves we laughed and had a great time. Today it was fun, however, we really focused on our exercise. My plan is to go every day except Saturday and Sunday. Tonight my shoulders are in a bit of pain. My doctor said it is arthritis and comes with age. Hopefully with time the pain will go away once I gain strength. The weight won't come off overnight, but I hope that eventually I will drop what is needed to be healthier.

Mariana...in a turtleneck and jeans, I'll pass...but as someone else said, jello is the word! I need to firm things up and mostly, I just need to be in better shape. I get winded going up 3 flights of stairs, or climbing a hill. I can walk for hours on a flat surface, but I can't run or go up an incline without feeling like my heart will explode. Mine is more about health and feeling good in my clothes than a major weight loss.

Sue* - you would die if you climbed the hill I climb every day - it takes a long time to get where I am and if I miss a day (as I just missed many days) then I have to start over - but it's only one half hour up and about 20 minutes down - it's toning but this ten pounds is hard on the heart - I agree about the health issues, of course - yes, most of us need more activity.

Rick, well, it seems you are a walker right? If not, then walk in place or get an exercise ball - as I said - just be conscientious and put the number you want to weigh in an obvious place - your body will respond in kind to that number...of course, many of us just need to fast for a day or so before beginning but that's a whole other post. I used to have colonics each season and do a whole fasting thing but situations change so I'm going with this flow - and doing it on my own! Salud

I've started doing this. I'm 5'5" and you won't get my weight out of me. I cut out pop, I stop eating when I'm full (a huge problem in my family) and I've started cutting down on calorie intake. It helps when there are more people around to help!

I'm 5'6" and roughly 185 pounds. My doctor told me I should try to lose 67 pounds to get back to my ideal weight for my height and body type - 118 pounds. I'm trying this year, actually trying but first I have to eat more to get my metabolism up and running again, then I have to do more too. It will definitely be an uphill battle.

Ashley - most of those ideal weight charts are way off - how old are you and have you ever in your life weighed 118? Many of us inherit larger bodies and we'll never be thin - 118 sounds pretty thin for 5'6. Id say that if you weighed 145, you'd be doing great! Ok well keep in touch and we'll see if we can help you out.

You have to eat lots of fruits and vegetables - live food - and complex carbs. I believe in eating for one's DNA - but that's just me - this is a fun group but I think if we all open up and be honest, it will help each of us to get healthy! That's your number one concern, getting healthy - your ideal weight will come soon. Salud

I lost 52 pounds in 52 weeks by limiting my fat. And I've kept it off for 5 years. Now, I would like to lose another 20 to 30...maybe even 40. When I was sick in the fall, I stopped my wine habit...and lost 10 pounds. I started enjoying my wine with dinner again...and think I've gained some back. Now, I am going off with you! I need to exercise, too.

Great idea! I just got a Weider Crossbow thanks to Freecycle to jump start my efforts. I am looking to lose a total of 30 pounds the healthy way. Starting with 10 is my kind of thinking. I also have wine at night which leads to snacking - same problem! We take similar supplements too (glucosamine/chon. and cod liver oil capsules). I am on a holistic health shake to supplement my breakfast and lunch. This would make more accountable

Yo Stacey - ok girl, well, I am drinking water with lemon squeezed in it out of my wine glass - wine is out as of today until March 21 - if my friend flies out from La. we may do St. Patty's day and I'll just walk more...I eat watermelon every morning for breakfast along with oatmeal - I have a salad for lunch and dinner varies but mostly vegetables, pastas, beans and rice type things - back in La. I have a shake every morning, out of cantelope, watermelon, soy powder, and other things - I need to get back in that habit but the hub does cut up my watermelon.
Ok what's the stats? how tall - how much?

What's a crossbow? I could lost 30 pounds too but am starting with ten - I'm small boned - when I lose weight - even ten pounds it makes a huge difference...

Ok here's to you with water in a wine glass - Salud

I go to the gym almost everyday after work, I started going to help me relieve my stress but I have been able to drop a few pounds.

Ok so you want to weigh 160 by March 21 - right? Ok now what's the weight that you'd love to weigh by summer? I will guess 145 for you...it's 130 for me. Whatever your ideal summer number is write it in big letters near your puter...but for now, 160 seems to be your goal for March 21 - Salud!

Mariana, you're too good. My ultimate goal IS 145. I was there less than 2 years ago but health problems made me get discouraged and then lazy. I am writing it in big letters now. We're on the way!

Elle - I used to go to the gym daily as well - it was fun but then the hub retired and now we walk everyday but it's a strenuous walk - I lift arm weights on my own - I do miss the butt blaster and some of the thigh tighteners but I am looking around for a good Yoga class.

Stacey - sometimes toning up is better than weight loss - the point here is health - and yes, we are on the way!!! Thanks for your enthusiasm - because once we begin the walk - doors will open all over the place! Let's have fun. How old a you anyway? Salud

Now I'm really getting onto sensitive territory - age and weight LOL. Just turned 41. Seems the metabolism started to slow to a halt as I approached 40 :(

I apologize but it just gives me an idea - as us older gals tend to lose weight slower - at 41 - oh you're going to be great!!! I used to take a combo vitamin of kelp, lecithin and apple cider vinegar and that helped speed up the metabolism. It worked for me but we're all different and I do believe in eating for our DNA...makes sense huh! Salud

Ok....you and Sue* have talked me into it!!!! LOL I'm 5'5" and as far as weight I am approximately 10 pounds over weight, -- I like Sue wear from an 8-10 depending on how it is made. Since I've retired (10/19/07) I've gone from size 10 to size 8 in blue jeans (patting myself on the shoulder) for which I am so thankful since I was afraid I would gain weight by staying at home!!

I drink one Diet Mt Dew every morning along with couple cups of coffee BUT I do drink 96 ounces of water a day. Water is an absolute 'must' for me....I've had eight kidney stones so per doctor's orders I must drink water to keep my kidneys flushed. Kidney stones are genetic (mother, uncle and grandmother all with stones) so drinking lots of water is a major part of my life (been drinking 96 ounces of water for the past ten years and since this time I've only had one stone, thank God)!

Start a group my beautiful friend and count me in!!! We can do it....we all can do it!! :O)

Mariana, you know how I lost 25# in 2005? Cajun dancing. And in 2006, same thing. In 2007, I took off another 10 pounds and last year, it was five pounds. I still need to drop another twenty; I've heart disease and arthritis in my family history as well as diabetes.

How's this: I'll lose 5 pounds by February 20th when BeauSoleil plays a show at the Cedar in Minneapolis. Deal? :-)

I used to weigh 118...about 4 or 5 years ago. While he says that's my ideal weight, I'd be happy with the 135-145 range. By the way, I'm 24 - almost 25.

No time to read all of the comments, but I've already made the decision to peel some pounds. I need to lose way more than ten, but I've come up with a plan to attack it very slowly.

I don't like the idea of dieting at my age. I'm tired of depriving myself of some of the more enjoyable things in life. Exercise is hideous, but there are some things I enjoy doing, like bike riding and walking along the water's edge. Given the fact that I live in the snowbelt, those activities aren't likely to occur any time soon.

We just bought a Wii and so far, we're having a blast with it. It's exercise in the form of play. I hope it helps, as I really don't eat much. I quit smoking 2.5 years ago and started into menopause at the same time. I think most of my weight gain can be rolled up into those two factors, and I'm hoping that a little more movement in my life will increase my metabolism enough to help slowly take the pounds off.

Yes, my dear friend, this is a great idea... I'm just one inch smaller than you are, so to lose three or even five kilos (sorry, no pounds for me) would be in order. ;-) Good luck to you!

ok, i'm game. let's do it. i'm 5'8" 165 lbs...but would like to be about 135-140...
have i ever told you about the water rule? i'm trying to follow it, but it's hard because i'm not a big drinker.
-every day you need to drink half your weight in ounces (weigh 150 lbs - drink 75 oz water per day).
-for every serving of caffeine or alcohol, add 8 oz of water (they are both diuretics and drain your body of water).
-be sure to add a pinch of sea salt (not table salt - sea salt has over 40 minerals where table salt only has about 5) to your food or water to replace the minerals you've flushed (no pun intended).
this amount of water will rid your body of toxins and help you lose fat.
whattaya say?

I'm in, Mariana... though I have lots more to lose than ten pounds. Winter makes exercise more difficult for me, and now that I've begun working, that has also interfered. I do get plenty of exercise while I work, but I work only three days a week and I need more exercise than that!

I'll be brave... I'm 5'4" and 180. (That was difficult, mind you.) I actually love my body and so does my husband, and most of what I have is muscle and not fat. I am "proportionate." But there's still too much of me. I know that all I have to do is cut down a bit and exercise consistently...

I've joined and I my task for the day is to add to my water intake. I don't really drink much at all...ever. I know that I'm always dehydrated, I just don't get thirsty. So, I have a couple cups of tea, maybe a cup of coffee...enough water to swallow my pills and that is it. So, my lemons are ready and I'm going to report (just to the group) at the end of the day. Thanks for doing this!

oooh - going without wine? I don't want to lose weight that badly (5'11' - 195 lbs) but I do need to "tighten up" what I have. OK - I'll work with you and see what I can do - 10 lbs would be great for me to lose. We'll see.
Good Luck Mariana!

Ashley - thank you so very much - I really appreciate that!!!

Thank you Elizabeth - yes, I know - more energy and more time to get things done which need doing - believe me - I have been here before!

Thank you Christy!!
Richard - I know but on special occasions, I can drink wine but you know how us wine drinkers instinctively reach for the cork screw at 4 PM in the winter? ok and drink until we go to bed - sipping slowly - frozen grapes and all...anyway, it's just a habit and now I'll fill my crystal with water! it sounds great. I am probably going to have to take more drastic measures though. Due to my disability, I cannot do standard exercises, since I can't even walk more then a few blocks without getting dizzy and passing out. I have been looking for excersizes that you can do in bed or laying down that would help. (My blood pressure doesn't bounce around that way, and I don't pass out.) Since I have been unable to work, I have gained back most of the weight I had previously lost to a gastric bypass. My doctor is considering a revision, but he has to make sure there hasn't been a problem first. I am not happy about my weight, and I am over 400. (5'6" at last check)

I think I could loose some, however I put weight on when my health went south. But some days getting my legs to even move is a joke, so what does one do?

I wish you well, and watch tooth paste, creams, lotions with sugars in them ;0)

I'll be doing it with you, but I'd rather not share anything about my personal battle on here. I've been doing it for a couple years now and had lost 50lb., but gained a bit back after I had my gallbladder removed and stopped exercising for a while. I'm getting back to it now though. So I'll be doing it with you in spirit!
