Batanes is the northernmost cluster of islands in the Philippines, home of the typhoons, closer to Taiwan than to the Philippine mainland (190 km south of Taiwan, and 280 km from Aparri). I was born in a place where time seems to stand still. The weather of Batanes is cool and windy. And it rains a certain month of the year. It has an almost temperate temperature from December to February where temperatures dip as low as 7 degrees centigrade. My impressions? I am touched by the simplicity and sincerity of the folks. It's a place reached by modernization but it values keep alive untouched. There is no distinction between the rich and the poor. They speak good Filipino and English. They are accomplished people. They are soft spoken and shy. They are very legitimate and transparent. They sing well. They are very pious. The church is always filled with people. Even small children participate in the celebration of the mass.
