I love it when I log into my email and discover a devotional from Jason Mitchener. Jason is quite an inspiration. He's a middle aged man who is in a wheelchair and on a ventilator. Because of his disabilities, his devotionals don't always come daily. But when they do come, I am blessed.
Like Elijah
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
1 Kings 18:44
Because King Ahab worshiped Baal, God brought a drought upon Israel. For three years, not a drop of rain fell from the sky.
In the third year of the drought, God sent Elijah to Ahab. "Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain," Elijah told him (verse 41).
Prepare for an abundance of rain? Not one single raindrop had fallen in three years! Ahab must have thought Elijah was crazy.
Elijah fell to the ground and started praying. Soon, he sent his servant to the sea to see if any rain was in sight.
Nothing.
Elijah prayed.
Still nothing.
Again, Elijah sent his servant to look for rain. Still nothing. Elijah continued praying. The seventh time, the servant gazed across the sea and saw a tiny cloud in the distance. He ran to Elijah with the news.
This was enough for Elijah. He told his servant, "Go tell Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot and get out of here. The rain is coming.'"
The small cloud grew. The sky blackened, the wind howled, and rain fell in torrents.
In the New Testament, James reminds us of Elijah, and the powerful results of a godly man's fervent prayer. James tells us we are made of the same stuff as Elijah (James 5:17).
Christian, are you really like Elijah? Do you pray for the impossible and keep praying even when you see no sign of God answering? Then when you see the tiny rain cloud, do you thank God for answering as you run for your umbrella?
When I became a Christian, I started praying that my mom would get saved. For years there was no answer, not even a little sign. Then one day she said she was going to a monthly prayer meeting with her coworkers. A few years ago, my mom was baptized as a new believer in the Lord. I was amazed at how much change had taken place.
When I shared this with a friend, he said, "Why are you so surprised? You prayed, didn't you?"
Christian, pray like Elijah! Pray with faith. Pray with fervency.
I can hear the rain now.
(If this devotional has blessed you, please pass it on.)
