Last night we went out and got momma (and the others) some healthier food. We got cheese flavored chew sticks and another treat dish as well for the wet foods like eggs and tuna.
So, we bought them:
- Oats
- Whole grain cereal (Cheerios)
- Tuna
We also bought the following for our food that they can eat as well:
- Carrots
- Eggs
- Chicken
We also have white bread, but not sure how good that is for them since it's not whole grain bread. But, for now she's on a better diet than just the mix she was fed in the store.
Momma (and the others) gobbled up the oats and cereal last night, but the tuna wasn't popular. We'll try again some other day.
Momma has been nest building in a furious manner. She'll shove it in with her paws, nose and mouth. Also she'll just lay in the tubes breathing heavy for long periods of time. She seems to alternate between the tubes and the igloo, but I think she really wants to have the pups in the tubes... and the others just won't leave them to her. As a rule, she doesn't seem to mind them there, but I've seen her agressive about it a couple times. I'm considering some how to block her and the tubes off, but I can never find a time when she's the only one in there... and I don't want to pick her up, of course.
So, for now I'm just watching to see how upset she gets before I decide if I'll make that move or not. The cage would be rather cramped if I blocked it off, but if it stresses her less, then I'll do that.
She also after I went to bed took the toilet tissue in the tubes. Before that she looked at it without interest and seemed spooked of it. I threw in some small pieces of felt that she can shred for added warmth to the nest and comfort for when the pups come.
Hopefully this all will help her out as she makes the last plans to have her babies! I'll keep you all posted on her progress and when the pups arrive (and how many she has - eek!)
It's times like these that I'm glad we have the tiny feeder mice rather than the big fancy mice. We eventually will only keep the females since the males will fight with one another while females live peacefully together.

The only way would be to place a divider down the middle.. not sure what it'd be made of or how it would stay either. It's a 50 gallon tank so I COULD do that, but the other 4 would be cramped.
I am more of a rat person myself.
I was looking for mouse food and all I saw was hamster, guinea pig, gerbil. Only exception was that there were mouse treats, but the seed mixes none were for mice only. :( I looked at the pet store and at Walmart.
I might look on Amazon. I have some gift cards for there that I could use to pay for it.
She doesn't seem to mind them most times but I've caught her being aggressive and chasing them out. So she seems okay.
They all sleep cuddled together in the tubes and they do get along well.
We are going to Walmart again today so I'll be sure to look for it. If not I'll order it tonight on Amazon or have Clint stop in to the pet shop on the way home from work and place an order for it.
here it is on amazon
One day she was putting up clothes that she had just washed and found that one of her daughters had been feeding them (it turned out to be a pregnant female who had given birth) in her clothes drawer. LOL
She'll like those things you bought for her.
OMG Connie! That's so funny! What'd she do then?
She's sweet, isn't she, Susan? She did love her chicken last night. I got some videos to post today of her enjoying it.
and I see I was wrong about the bunny, lol.
Indeed you were, Kim. :P I figured most would pick the bunny, LOL
Thanks Nancy. They are really playful... but not now. I think it's nearly time for the pups
I hope you have a happy Spring!
