Some people need less sleep than 7-8 hours. The best way to tell how much sleep your body needs is to simply sleep as late as your body lets you--no alarm clock--during a vacation. If your body consistently awakens you after only 3-5 hours, then that's probably what you need. If so, you would be very unusual: most people who sleep only 3-5 hours a night find that they really need more.
