An exciting Lost World adventure in which a small expedition discovers the fabled graveyard of the whales and a surviving colony of Vikings on a nearly inaccessible island in northern Canada.
Captain McIver Ross is desperately trying to find his son Donald, who went off on his own to find the legendary place where whales went to die. His helicopter never returned so Ross gets his friend, Professor James Somerville, and the narrator, whaler and fisherman Keith Togers, to take thier huskies and sledge across the ice to remote Prince Patrick Island (you'll find it on a map; it's described by Rogers as the size of Scotland).
When they arrive, they make a series of discoveries, about the whales' graveyard, about the inhabitants of the island, about Ross's son, and more.
Disney filmed it with David Hartman and Mako, relocated it from 1960 to the turn of the 20th century so they could bring in a cool airship, and made some other predictable changes. The movie changes aren't needed for this quick adventure.
Amazon has a few copies in paperback and in hardcover. A recommended story. Cameron wrote an unrelated sequel in 1972, Mountains At the Bottom of the World involving another variation on the Lost World plot.
