Paris, December, 2008
Despite the winter chill the Champs Elysees
Was thronged with Christmas shoppers (dressed in black
Parading like louche priests or nuns, the lack
Of color in accordance with decrees
reported in the fashion magazines -
So puffer jackets, leather coats, gilets,
Gloves, scarves and hats - all black and matching greys
To complement the black designer jeans).
Emerging from the shops in colonies
Clutching sweetmeats chosen for a queen
Or sipping coffee in the Tuileries
Their mission is to see and to be seen
As bearers of the sacred noir et grise!
