I was in 6th grade when I first learned how to draw a simple horse head drawing. I was taught by a girl at school. We were on the playground at recess one day and she said "This is how I draw a horse head." She took a stick and drew a simple horse head in the dirt. I've always remembered that because it was just so simple and I've been drawing horses off and on for years since then.
I've chosen that simple horse head to share so everyone can make simple horse heads too. Of course I'm using a computer and not a stick but the idea is exactly the same. I am using the program MS Paint that comes with every computer free.
First thing to do is open the Microsoft Paint program. When the program opens, it defaults to the color black ink which is perfect to draw a simple horse head. It also defaults to the drawing pencil which you can use. It has a thin line so instead I used the brush with the medium size circle for my horse head because its easier to see. The size of your picture(virtual paper) can be stretched to any size you want.
Step 1. Draw a line for neck. Just a line on an angle.
Step 2. Draw ears (sort of like a letter M)
Step 3. Draw a line for the face
Step 4. Draw a curved line for the nose.
Step 5. Draw a line from the curved nose line back to the neck line and add a curve at the end.
Step 6. Draw a line on an angle with a slight curve for the neck. Now the basic and simple horse head shape is done
Step 7. Add a mane to your horses neck. Make it as big or small as you want. Make sure your lines are all connected at the ends or you won't be able to use the fill tool to add color to your horse head.
Step 8. Add a forelock (piece of mane on forehead), always make sure your lines all connect (are touching each other)
Step 9. Add nostrils to your horses nose
Step 10. Draw an eye for your horse head.
*Optional step 11. Add a small gray dot or line to horses eye. You can change colors by clicking on it at the bottom of the MS Paint program.
Step 12. Add a mouth for your horse.
Step 13. Add the line at the bottom of the horses neck so you can use the fill tool to add color to your horse. Otherwise the entire drawing will be one color. *Optional step - add a few lines by the nose, mouth and eye to add detail to your horse head.
Step 14. Pick a color for your horse and click on it at the bottom of the MS Paint screen. Choose the fill tool (looks like a bucket of paint spilling) and "paint" your horse a color.
Step 15. "Paint" your horses mane a different color and you are finished with your simple horse head!
To save your horse head on your computer, save it as a 24-bit bitmap (bmp) file first. This way you can change the colors of your horse if you want to. If you save your drawing as a gif or jpg file first, then you will not be able to easily edit it if you want to make changes to it. Before you upload your drawing to Gather (for example), then you can save your drawing as a jpg file. I found this out the hard way!
