Sorry! That's sad. Another tip: don't use Hartz grocery-store flea products. They are toxic and cause bad reactions in some dogs. Better to use a product from your vet.

Yes, they can splinter and cut the intestine wall as they pass. That's why you saw the blood.

well, that's interesting to note. Maybe they didn't realize that dogs don't just chew on the bones, but chew off pieces of them, too. I try to keep any chew bones as natural as possible. But even rawhide can cause a problem if they swallow a big enough chunk--but at least there are no sharp edges like with nylabones. My guys generally don't chew off enough of their bones to cause any problems so far.

We had a similar incident with a rawhide bone; we no longer give them to our dogs. I think Greenies are safe, as are the bones made of cornstarch. Our doggies like the gross stuff---hooves, pig ears and worse. :-O

Thanks for the info- I tried Nylabones with our small dog a while ago, but she wasn't interested in them- luckily as it turns out.

Greenies are definitely okay. And as far as toys, avoid vinyl- those can be a problem if they swallow any of it. I was told by the vet that latex toys are safer.

My chipper can't chew as his teeth are all gone but one, so i don't buy chewy things for him. Thanks for the info tho, as my daughters doggies love to chew on the rawhide bones. I will let her know.

Real bones are VERY dangerous- they can easily splinter and make them choke or puncture internal organs. I know someone who had a Yorkie who died from a chicken bone.

Also, did you know that pine needles can kill a dog if ingested? Same reason, they can puncture an organ and cause internal bleeding. And the body won't break it down. Dogs are actually less capable than humans of digesting or passing products- that's why you have to be so careful what you feed them and monitor their environment.

I posted an article last month on dangerous plants for dogs and included a link to a site that lists them all and what part of them is toxic (there are TONS of plants that can seriously injure or kill dogs even if they just nibble on them) and dangerous foods as well.

Wow thanks for all the info! Actually, yes bones are dangerous...If cooked. But raw bones are safe. They cannot splinter as long as they are large enough. And actually alot of dog show people feed their dogs a stick raw food diet as its better for them and it makes sense since their ancestors ate that way. More natural. But Yes cooked bones are very dangerous and can kill dogs!

I didnt know about pine needles!! Good to know :0)

How horrible! I'm so glad Chewy will be fine. This reminds me of the mess with Greenies a few years back. I got a sample of them in the mail last week for the kittens, and while I haven't been able to find out anything bad about the kitten ones, I still am very hesitant to feed them to them.
