Birding in the Neighborhood

I was able to take a short break this afternoon to step outside and play with the new telephoto lens that I received for Christmas. It just arrived on Tuesday and this was my first opportunity to try it out in the sunlight.

There was a little bird on the lawn across the street. I'm not sure what it is but was able to capture enough detail that should allow me to identify it when I hit my birding books later.

Of course, now I can't wait to go on a real photo expedition to see what I can do with this new lens.

Ahh - yes, I think you're right - for some reason I wanted to call it a nuthatch and knew that wasn't right.

It's a type of woodpecker, right? We see them on our trees in the backyard in the summer. Very nice work, Tonia.

Yup, that's a Northern Flicker. What a gorgeous shot! What camera are you using, and what lens is the telephoto?

Roy - it's a Pentax k200d with a 75mm-300mm Pentax lens. The bird did allow me to get pretty close and then I radically cropped the shot. I was pleased to see the quality despite that.

Thanks everyone for confirming it is a flicker - though I have to say I enjoyed Dame Ruth's shots in the dark :)

Tonia, its a male flicker. The female wouldn't have the black malar (mustache). Flickers are a species of woodpecker.

75-300mm! You'll LOVE it! A LOT of my nature shots are on one of those...well...err...a Nikon lens though! Excellent capture Tonia! I see they've ID'd this for you already! I'm excited for you! (Somebody Loves you!) :o)
