On December 31, 2008, the United Press International published an article by Martin Sieff, titled "2008 in review: The 'lost' stories the media missed."
In the article, Sieff writes that in 2008, "there was the continuing genocide of Christian African tribes in Darfur in Western Sudan. The United States, the European Union, the United Nations and the African Union all proved totally useless in even stemming the violence."
I agree that the international community was totally useless in stopping the Darfur conflict in 2008. But, please, could you check your facts first, Mr. Sieff, before you write completely false information?
If you knew anything about Darfur, you would know that there are no Christians in Darfur. All people in Darfur are Muslim and both "Africans" and "Arabs" are black.
I know there are many ignorant people in the Western world who don't even know where Sudan and Darfur are and who think that Africa is a country and not a continent. But I cannot believe that a journalist is writing such rubbish and a media such as the United Press International is publishing it.
Don't they have an editor or someone else at the United Press International to check the facts?

If Christians are being killed it is no surprise, religion holds no safety net over any race of people.
Darfur is probably the most under-reported war going on in the world today. Most of the news I've heard about it has been about the tortures to women and children. The tv show ER gave more insight to what is going on there than the news.
The only reason it could possibly matter to some people would be if they have a particular prejudice for or against another type. Where I'm from, that's called bigotry, sexism, racism, or whatever the case may be, depending on the group type in question.
I happen to be of the opinion that what is going on there is not our problem or our concern, but that has nothing to do with the TYPE of people there. It has everything to do with what our government's job is, and isn't. And this isn't it.
Catholic charities are located all over Africa. SAVO!
I would guess that Christians are persecuted in Darfur. There is an epidemic of murder happening there. It doesn't seem to concern our leadership in the USA, however.
"No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main.... Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in Mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." -John Donne
Why does it matter if Christians are not being killed in Darfur? It does not, people are people. However, it does matter that the Western media keep misleading the public about the conflict.
Please read a book or an article by Alex de Waal, Gerard Prunier, Julie Flint, or any other Sudan expert and you will find out that all people in Darfur are Muslim.
Do media lies matter? Did it matter that the media did not question the US government's claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction? In the case of Iraq, the media also misled you and we all know what happened there!
The media has been lying to America and distorting the truth for their own political agendas for decades. It started with Walter Conkrite when he broke with journalistic protocol and gave his opinion of a story he was reporting on instead of just reporting the facts there of. The news media and every journalist held their breaths waiting to see how the axe would fall on this very popular newsman. It never did. Soon more news reporters and anchors started slipping their opinions in and it continued to evolved into what we have to day with newscasters blatanly telling you what your opinion better be if you don't want to be trashed or labeled bigot, racist, homophobe, arrogant, or what ever the attack plan needs to be to destroy credibility and promote agenda. The likes of stellar commentators like Eric Severide disappeared into the dust bin of History and the dumbing down of the American populace started full force. It has been wildly successful and now we react with total emotion and little if any intellect, the results of which are demonstrated daily in the frustration, anger and disrespect we have for any that dare disagree with a dissenting opinion. Things are just beginning to get rough in America.
