Israeli soldiers, thought to be numbering upwards of 10,000, moved into the Gaza Strip today, signaling the beginning of a new phase in the military campaign. Given the fact that Israel recently allowed those holding foreign passports to leave the enclave, the invasion is not a complete surprise.
In relation to this new development, Israel says that Hamas is not yet sufficiently crippled while some analysts suggest that Hamas was anxious for today's operation to take place. If the Israeli troops enter the heavily populated areas, these analysts say, the resistance could be particularly intense.
Meanwhile, leaflets are falling into Gaza advising the civilian population to leave the city, suggesting that an urban showdown may, indeed, be part of the Israeli strategy. Comments attributed to leaders of Hamas suggest that one of its goals is to achieve the overthrow of the Fatah political organization which controls the Palestinian West Bank territory. Fatah, unlike Hamas, has the official backing of the Israeli and U.S. governments.
The Hamas charter calls for the destruction of the State of Israel and the occupation of the area by the Palestinians.
Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority's Fatah movement insisted yesterday that Hamas is responsible inasmuch as it ended the truce with Israel on December 20. That truce had more or less been in effect for six months, except for a brief interruption in November during the tunnel incident, which Israel claimed was causing weapons to be brought into Gaza and which Hamas claimed was enabling the importation of needed supplies of food and medicine. Hamas, which fired missiles into southern Israel at that time and which resumed its missile attacks on December 20, is now branding Abbas as an Israeli collaborator further supporting its goal of weakening Fatah.
As a result, the operation continues to foment divisions, particularly within the Palestinian community, with demonstrations taking place in the West Bank between those supporting a cease fire and those advocating a broader uprising against Israel.
So far, despite some evidence of a mobilization, Hezbollah in Lebanon has stayed out of the conflict. A leading cleric in Iran warned that Fatah has a new weapon that can effectively target tanks at a distance. The remark gave considerable support to the claim that Iran is responsible for arming Fatah.
Except for the allowed departure of citizens with foreign passports, Israel and Egypt have sealed the Gaza borders. The West bank has also been sealed off since Thursday night.
Israel is continuing its policy of not allowing journalists to enter the conflict zone. The L.A. Times reported that the human rights group, Amnesty International, sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticizing the Bush administration's "lopsided" reaction and "lackadaisical efforts to ameliorate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza."
At the same time, it was also reported that "a coalition of Israeli human rights groups announced that Gaza's electrical system was "at the point of collapse." The diesel fuel needed to operate the territory's only power plant as well as the backup generators in all of the hospitals comes into the Gaza Strip via a pipeline from Israel. Because of an interruption in the supply along this line, the power plant has been shut down since Monday.
On Friday, according to press reports, the Bush administration characterized the Hamas attacks on Israel "unacceptable" and said the United States was leading the diplomatic efforts for a meaningful cease fire. President-elect Barack Obama has largely stayed clear of the fray, stating that the country has only one president at a time.

One of the basic goals of government is to protect and serve its citizens. By launching rockets into Israel, Hamas has put its citizens in harms way.
In my opinion, they should have embraced the 2 state solution. I personally don't believe they will ever achieve their goal of eliminating the Jews, just as Native Americans and Mexicans will never see the return of the lands, here in the United States, that they once held sovereignty over.
I know this might sound harsh, but it's time for a reality check. Accept the 2 state solution, rebuild your infrastructure, grow your economy and focus on the needs of your citizens. The world is willing to provide economic support, but with things the way they are now, who wants to invest in uncertainty?
I think part of the Israeli attack at this time is their fear of the unknown new president Obama. He may pull our support??? Israel can not take that chance.
One of the basic goals of government is to protect and serve its citizens. By launching rockets into Israel, Hamas has put its citizens in harms way."
illustrates exactly why I believe we were less secure while Bush was in office. The same could be said of us, only we the people did not elect him.
I'm just being realistic. Hamas, Fatah and the Palestian people have to choose an alternative path.
What they are getting from their leaders has not worked and is only leading to death and destruction.
I'm sure that's not what they hoped for when they elected Hamas to represent them.
This is a sad situation, and to reiterate what's already been said, no one will end up a winner from this battle.
Lloyd, those desparate, hopeless people seem to believe that they would rather die fighting than locked away in their concentration camps to slowly starve. It's a terrible situation, not getting any better from actions on either side. Israel has control of Palestinian taxes and refuses to release funds for even humanitarian aid. Well, over half of Palestinian children are reported by humanitarian groups as being malnourished and dying daily. I can't help but wonder if Israel wouldn't gain more by feeding the children and allowing the people to work than they do with their military responses. Hamas got its hold on the people by trying to improve conditions for the innocent.
Dave: I'm questioning this sentence, does it contain an error?
A leading cleric in Iran warned that *Fatah* has a new weapon that can effectively target tanks at a distance. The remark gave considerable support to the claim that Iran is responsible for arming Hamas.
Otherwise, a good and informative article as always. Thanks.
I also think we as a country should stop pandering SO much to Israel. All the massacres in history have been awful, with the Holocaust being among the worst, but so was Rwanda, the Armenian Genocide.
We need to have some perspective.
And I do know where of I speak.
My stepmother was in Warsaw during WWII and her father was a teacher and a member of the Communist party, who likely helped Jews, and the Nazi's hung him in the street.
I knew Israel would do this. Hamas has been rattling their swords claiming they would desimate the jews if they invaded. I don't think so. The Israelie soulder is probably the third best fighting man in the world, behind Turkey and the US. They don't mess around with trivialaties like we do. Gaza will be back under Israel rule before long if that is what it takes.
Anybody who just fires rockets into another country without expecting a reaction is an idiot !!!
I believe that if Hamas would change its charter, stop firing rockets into Israel and let it be known that they sincerely want peace, the international community would pressure Israel into releasing all funds and loosening its grip over Gaza.
Why should the deal be so one sided? Why should Israel do things to make life easier for the Palestinians when the Palestinians force Israelis into bomb shelters on a daily basis by continuing to fire rockets across the boarder?
Since the Palestinians are in the weaker military and financial situation, they don't have much of a bargaining chip other than to stop firing rockets across the boarder.
Of course, Fatah, and many Palestinians agree with Lloyd, but the religious fanatics have been too powerful to be overcome. One cannot negotiate or compromise with fanatics, on any side.
Wait for the instances of Israeli soldiers shooting middle school kids in the back, mistaking them for a Hamas killer. Urban warfare is ugly, and Israeli rules of engagement have been goofy in the past.
Chris W gets it right on how the people of Gaza have been victims of Hamas. Hamas had a chance like Fatah to build up their infrastructure and civil institutions but both chose to increase their political/military control while robbing their own people of jobs and money. One can say the Israelis are part to blame but only to the extent they are trying to go beyond reacting to terrorists and hurting them bad enough to either gain time or cause the Gazans to question any support for Hamas and war.
Rules of engagement for urban terrain are difficult. Any soldier/Marine will tell you that you have fractions of a second to make a determination to shoot or not. In that time, the other guy will be doing the same. Its not Israeli ROEs that are goofy nor are they intentionally killing civilians but when you only have a fraction of a second, sometimes innocents get hurt or worse.
Anyway, many of you think you can come up with some magic rule to protect civilians in such combat. The only true protection those people have is simply don't be in the way when the IDF comes through. Of course Hamas will ensure that civilians cannot evac, the more dead the better for their propaganda machine.
If Israel is going after Hamas then they need to do it with consideration for the innocent people of the area. If Hamas will not give up its stand that the Jews or any race of people should be wiped out then they need to go.
Abbas was the best hope for peace back when Sharon was still in power and Sharon practically spit on him.
The Palestinians need to form their own independent government and get on with building their future. Like its posted above Hamas is only popular because of the food and relief they give but that is only a scam to recruit more bombers.
Israel also has to give up its dream of taking back the old borders that were Israel but will never be theirs again.
Israel has done everything it can to minimize civilian damage and Hamas has done everything it can to maximize civilian damage. Liberals do everything they can to do everything Hamas wants AFTER the damage. Terrorists everywhere owe liberals a debt of gratitude. When was the last time liberals blamed terrorists for causing atrocities?
1. The issue of media distortion of the events surrounding the war in Lebanon couldn’t be exaggerated. In FTR#564, we touched on some of the falsification of photographic evidence in the Lebanon war, as well as the staging or embellishment of civilian casualties. This information is reviewed at the end of this program description. As noted here, among the factors skewing the media coverage of the war is the fact that Hezbollah very carefully restricted media access to the battlefield. In fairness to the journalists who covered the war, most of them saw only what Hezbollah allowed them to see. Nonetheless, the facile and inappropriate comparisons of Israel to the Nazis are outrageous, as well as preposterous. For example, one brigade of the Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler (a Waffen SS division) burned 200 villages in the Soviet Union with the people locked in the buildings, earning the nickname “the Blowtorch Brigade.” [A brigade usually consists of approximately 3,500 men, although this number can vary greatly from one army to the next.] “Large sections of the international media are not only misreporting the current conflict in Lebanon. They are actively fanning the flames. The BBC world service has a strong claim to be the number-one villain. It has come to sound like a virtual propaganda tool for Hezbollah. As it attempts to prove that Israel is guilty of committing ‘war crimes’ and ‘crimes against humanity,’ it has introduced a new charge — one which I have heard several times on-air in recent days. The newscaster reads out carefully selected ‘audience comments.’ Among these are invariably contained some version of the claim that ‘Israel’s attack on Lebanon’ will serve as a ‘recruitment’ drive for al-Qaeda. But if anything is going to win new recruits for Osama bin Laden and his like, it will not be Israel’s defensive actions, which are far less damaging than Western TV stations would have us believe, but the inflammatory and one-sided way in which they are being reported by those very same news organizations.”
(“The Media War Against Israel” by Tom Gross; National Post; 8/2/2006.)
Israel has made peace with Egypt and Jordan and not attacked either of them.
Israel has ceded land for a Palestinian state and has promised to cede more if peace is maintained.
Hamas has the stated goal of destroying Israel. From my latest article, here are some Lowlights of the Hamas Covenant (Consitution)
* Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.
* The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up.
* There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors.
After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying.
If you are interested the Protocols of the Elders of Zion is:
The Protocols has been proven by respected international scholars, both Jewish and non-Jewish, to be a forgery,[1][2][3] a fraud,[4][5] a hoax,[6][7] and a classic case of plagiarism[8]. The original source has been clearly identified as an 1864 book by Maurice Joly entitled The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, which was written as a satirical attack against the ambitions and methods of French Emperor Napoleon III.[9] In the book, Machiavelli represented Napoleon III, and described a series of steps that he intended to take to become ruler of the world. The Joly book was in turn based on material borrowed from a popular novel of the time by Eugène Sue, The Mysteries of the People, in which the initiators of the plot to rule the world were Jesuits instead of Napoleon III. Neither the Joly book nor the Sue book mentioned Jews or Masons.
This book which is distributed throughout the Middle East in Hotels and given away by radical leaders is a libel against the Jews inciting people to fight against them and kill Jews because they are trying to take over the world. The King of Saudi Arabia gave Henry Kissinger a copy.
On the other side you have Israel which has many schools where they teach Muslims and Jewish children how to live together tolerantly.
This is not a very complex issue, you have to really try hard not to see the right and wrong of the matter ... even if neither side is perfect.
On July 20, 1951, Abdullah, while visiting Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, was shot dead by Mustafa Shukri Ashu, "a Palestinian from the Husseini clan."[5] On July 16, Riad Bey al-Solh, a former Prime Minister of Lebanon, had been assassinated in Amman, where rumors were circulating that Lebanon and Jordan were discussing a joint separate peace with Israel
Just for talking about making peace with Israel the King was assassinated in the most famous Mosque of Islam in Palestine. These radical Muslims from Palestine with their burning anti-semitism that they prefer to peace, and apparently many of them to life itself, especailly if it is someone else's life have no intention to let Israel or their own people ever have peace.
That is why it is important that the Palestinian be freed from these monstrous leaders so that there may be an end to the terrorism and murder and maybe peace in the future.

True Abbas allies where gunned down and excuted in Gaza when hamas took over that is a known fact. Also I like to correct you liberals weren't in the government the past 8 years...most if not many countries are conservatives or secular...show me where a country is liberal??? I didn't vote for a yellow back president whom didn't give a crap except to listen to private phone conversation and read emails and Renditions.
Yeah well the American government in power supports Israel even though the liberal media doesn't. Many liberals support Israel so I shouldn't have been so general. But I can promise you for every conservative you can show me that makes excuses for Hamas I can can give at least 10 liberals who do. Obama is pretty good at right and wrong so I am sure he will agree with me on this. THANK GOD!
Hamas has been raining rockets daily on Southern Israel for over 10 years now. It's such a daily ocurance that it is never even reported in the West. You have to read/watch between the lines of foreign newscasts to understand what's really going on because media outlets' reporting is so anti-semitic. I have not heard one report that even mentins that Hamas has been firing rockets into Israel for years now... violating a cease-fire agreement they supposedly signed.
The Israeli's have shown great restraint. Can you imagine a US president allowing Canada or Mexico to fire rockets into our country for years with absolutely no response? I certainly can't. Any government that won't protect its people is pointless. Why the people in Gaza allow Hamas to turn their lives into a garbage heap is beyond reason. But then I don't live in a corrupt society that cheapens the lives of it's people by allowing its fighters to hide among them.
I'm not happy at all about what's going on, but Israel has just as much a right to exist as any other nation. Nad they have just as much a right to denfend themselves. I'm sick of seeing/hearing anti-Israel discrimination in the press, on the TV, and on the radio. I thought that stopped when Nazi Germany was defeated.

Funny isn't it, if the British were so damnably pigheaded and imperialistic
they would grab back practically the whole Middle East ... maybe we ought
to fund them and the Israelis and the world might get a little peace.
Why is it that Allah only wants the Muslims to have all their original

Having said that I'm hoping that Hamas will realize that the Palestinian people are a conquered people
Why has Hamas blocked the exit for any Palestinian that is at the border at Egypt from going into Egypt as a refugee just to seek some refuge?
The answer to that Dave is so that more Palestinians will die in this conflict.
The problem there with all that is the conflict between the ideology between the people of Egypt and the people of Iran.
It's the one thing Carter can really say he "accomplished," and it got Sadat killed.
Shame on the entire race of Jews..who allow this to continue..if you read the talmud youwould see they are a hate mongering group of people who use the name of religion for their killing spree's...I dont buy it and the world doesnt either..shame on Israel..and those who suppport this terrorist state....
and until Israel signs an international nuclear treaty they are to be considered a rogue nation and should have sanction on it immediately. And attacked just like Iraq--fair is fair? freedom?
Why has Hamas blocked the access to the Egypt hospitals that were made ready to help them?
Why then has Hamas blocked all access into Egypt for any Palestinians to take refuse, when Egypt is ready for that?
Hitler by the way was elected by popular vote, just as Hamas was.
"the entire world" need not "buy" a thing--- the entire world has no choice but to recognize the rule of law, which means recognize internationally recognized borders, which means recognizing Israel's right to exist, which means when a nation is attacked they have the right to protect their borders, and their lives.
If "the entire world" condemns Israel, they set the precedent for terrorists to attack their country next. If internationally recognized borders are not considered valid, the rule of law is not considered valid, if the rule of law is not considered valid, chaos reigns and nations no longer exist.
Hence, "the entire world" recognizes a two state solution, even as they give lip service to the idea of "disproportionate response."
Legally, which is really the only "argument" to be made--- Israel is fully within their sovereign rights to do what they are doing.
No head of state will EVER suggest a nation does not have the right to defend itself, even if that nation happens to be Israel.

And did anyone ask if hamas militants injured the palestinians from their own hands or missiles going array and hitting the palestinians and claiming it was Israels???
The males think warmongering is sane! Can you imagine? They can't figure any other way out of their mind-pride traps than bloodletting, and ladies, the bombs are aimed at you. Because whoever hurts one mother-children-family hurts us all.
Males who are not in the rogue-warmongering mindset and who recognize the insanity of its "logic" can freely join the ladies in prayer - prayer that puts out such an incredible whirling vortex of healing energy that it completely shatters the ancient vengeance warmongering thoughtforms, and gives us the released energy to build new, sane, healthy structures. Thoughtforms of dynamic peace.
I do object to the disproportionate response by the Israeli's and the number of innocent Palestinians who are being killed by their wanton actions.
HUMANIST AND PROUD OF IT!
Where does the latest suicide bomber in Iraq, who killed over 40 people (including children) and who was ...OMG female!! fit into your absurdly simplistic view of reality?
The real problem with the mideast to me is actually Europe. One has to live there to believe the incredible degree of anti Israeli feeling, especially strong in Britain. Israel is considered to be, as Citizen commented, equivalent of to Nazi Germany, South Africa, etc.
The irony of all this is that the BBC, and other fiercely anti Zionist media outlets (most of them) are turning a blind eye to the increasing power and numbers of the Islamicists in their own countries, who have a very clear goal of domination over Europe. Only in Holland, Denmark and France to some extent, has the real danger been recognised. I dont know if it is too late or not. Islamic power in Europe is behind the lies and distortions of the European press and demonstrations, and that power might soon show itself in other ways as well. If Europe kept its nose out of the middle East, Hamas would be weakened, and peace would have a chance. But there is no hope for that as long as the Islamic influence in Europe goes unchecked.
Kathleen, what exactly does prortionate mean and what would it look like.
I have family living in Israel (well they left now because of the crisis) and I have always had front seat view to a problem spinning through history for centuries …The Judaic mere existence has been a sore eye for the Islamic community ever since the Canaan time , ever since the first tribal society spread its tentacles and captured land and human count superiority .
The Gaza strip and West Bank situations were dealt with by the Israelis (who btw had to grow tough and manipulative within the context) in the same manner a mischievous child would poke with a stick at a caged animal . At some point the teased lion in the cage will roar and try to get out .
For whatever it’s worth , I think Israel has the situation exactly where they wanted it to be . In my eyes it looks like a very healthy adult is picking up a fight with a handicapped child .

Why did Iran admit that Fatah has a new weapon targeting tanks. Are they getting involved now?
How many tunnels must be allowed to be built into Israel?
How many rockets must be shot at Israel?
How many Israelis soldiers must be kidnaped?
What is a proportionate response? Is it pure numbers? If is pro-rated numbers according to population? Is it numbers based on never-ending arguments about who started it, and who did what?
Or is it just based on who hates who enough and who can lie about who louder?
Or is it just based on might makes right?
I still have not heard anything that says what can stop this senseless violence and push Hamas to make peace with Israel over the neverending objection of all the rest of the radical Muslims in the area that want and pay for this war to continue year after year.
Who benefits? Who gets the money, the fame, the immortality, the virgins in heaven? Who is Iran sending support to? It's not the Palestinians people?
The Palestinians people supposedly had an election, but I wonder how fair it is to have an election in a country where certain statements are grounds for assassination ... statements like "Israel has a right to exist", "we should have a two state solution", "peace is more important that regaining Islamic lands" ... and so on.
