A desperate request for help

January 02, 2009 04:22 PM EST

Dear Gather Friends,

As some of you may have noticed I have been rather scarce on Gather lately.  If I have been here at all, it has been very brief.  I'd like to explain some of it, but the reason for this post is also a request for help.

We have only lived in Idaho since May of 2006.  We relocated here to help my mother after my younger brother passed away.  My other siblings all lived here already, but mymother has pretty much burned her bridges where they are concerned, and my husband and I are the only ones left willing to live next door to her to help take care of herproperties, which are in very rough condition.  My husband gave up a very good paying job to do this, and financially it has been a major strain on us since we moved here.

My husband worked for several companies before finding the one he most recently worked for.  All of them had either shut down or been shut down by the county or state.  Well at the beginning of December the company he works for, laid off their entire crew.  (They laid off all their men just before Christmas, but they had built a 5000 sq. ft. addition on their 5000 sq ft house, purchased a half million dollar motor home in Sept., and made several other expensive purchases right up to the point that they cried poverty and laidthe men off).

When my husband filed his unemployment, the person handling his account had neglected to do a few things(we still haven't been able to understand what the supervisor was saying), and we have not received a single check from unemployment yet.  We have been without an income since the last week of November.

We were already struggling because of the expense of repairing our water system, and a few other major unexpected home and auto repairs.  Needless to say, we were not expecting, nor did we have much of a Christmas this year.  The only one we did for was our daughter, and that was extremely limited. Fortunately for us she is old enough to understand, and was even sweet enough to tell us that we could skip it for this year.

On the Monday before Christmas we got a call from my Father-in-law, notifying us that my husbands brother had passed away that morning.  He was only 49, and though his health had been bad, this was totally unexepected. We explained to dad that financially we could not get to Kentucky for this, but he said there would be no services, he was just going to be cremated on Christmas Eve, so we would not have to feel like we let the family down.  It was hard on all of us, and our daughter took it very hard because this uncle had lived with us off and on since she was born.  Uncle "Wally" loved her and spent lots of time with her over the years.  This was just another incident among many just in December that have about brought me to my knees.  I won't bore you with details of the others, and I definately wouldn't consider that my problems are any worse than those faced by some of my Gather friends.

I am writing this to request any and all ideas for legitimately making money online, or other ideas for creating some desperately needed income.    Because my business is creating and selling jewelry and photo items, my business has dropped of significantly.  Obviously this economy has not left many with money for non-necessities.  The job market here is almost non-existant, we have been unable to find jobs.

I am desperate now, my husbands layoff, then inability to get the unemployment started in a more timely manner, has put us into a financial position we may not recover from and  because of all this, if I do not come up with at least $2000 by Feb. 1st, my husband, daughter and I will lose everything we own.

Our belongings are all still in storage units in MA.  We did not take it with us immediately when we left, as we were unsure of what we would have for space.  At that point I had not made the decision as to whether I would move into my mothers other house, but if we did (which we did do)  we would be going from a very large
11 room home on 10 acres, into a very small 2 bedroom with just a yard.  Once we made the decision to stay in her other house to be close to her, we intended to make a trip back and get our things.  Well because of fuel prices, and the costof either renting a truck on our own or hiring a moving company, we were not able to do this.
We have gotten behind on the payments to the storage company, because of all the financial hits we have taken for the past several months, and if I cannot come up with the money, our things will be sold.  I have family heirlooms, and many irriplacable items stored in these units.  My husband owned a wrecking yard and garage, and all his tools are in there (which explains why he hasn't started up his own business here).  Even my daughter has heirloom items that cannot ever be replaced.

If any of you have any ideas as to websites where I may promote my jewelry, photography, and craft items, as well as other ideas, I would be ever so grateful.

If I lose all of this now, it will be the final straw for me.  I have lost everything on 2 other occasions in my life (through no fault of our own) and I am in no frame of mind

to deal with losing everything we own this time.  It is incomprehensible to me to lose over $60,000 worth of belongings for a bill of just over $2000.  We have a friend who will go in and remove our things from the units, as soon as they are paid current, and they will be stored in a large building they own, until weather permits us to make the
trip to pick up the things.

Please help in any way you can.

Thank you all for reading this, I have no place left to turn.  Several family members are struggling almost as much as we are, including my mother, so we cannot turn to them now.

Take a look at Project Payday; I had good success with it a year or so ago. Stopped because I didn't have time anymore. I don't have the link anymore, but you can find it on google. They are legit and you get paid quickly. Also there is Demand Studios; they pay for several talents you have as a writer including short articles and copy editting. Hope this helps.

First I would ask ole Mom to consider selling off some of her properties. I mean, it was she that precipitated your move west, wasn't it? Then, I would tell my siblings that they can either help you out, or they get Mom back.

Do you have anything in the units that your friend could buy, for paying the unit current?

As for the Unemployment, he will get it, backdated to two weeks after he filed, and that may be enough to keep your stuff.

I'm interested in the online work myself, as I lost my job last week also.

Good Luck!

Anne, Live Ops is a real work at home opportunity, which requires you to take incoming calls and take orders for products and information over the phone. I used to do it, though I don't anymore (no time.) You have to have a phone with no answering machine or caller id that is used only for the job and a headphone. (I got one for less than $30 at Walmart.) You also have to pay for a background check; when I started it was $30, I believe. But once you have that, all you need is an Internet connection. You work from scripts so you don't have to know what to say. You take basic information like names, addresses, credit card info, etc.

You choose the hours you work from hours available. They pay weekly. How much you makes depends on how much you work, but it can be quite profitible. You can check it out here:

Tough situation, the only thing I can offer is to check out mturk.com, you won't be able to make $2k there, but it might help you get a few hundred depending on how much time and energy you have to devote to it.

I'm not sure about working online, been there...done that. You have to be very cautious. I pick up extra money secret shopping with legit companies. I also do wine and food samplings on occasion to pick up an extra buck. Check out craigslist.com in your area for temporary promotion jobs. Oh, wait just a minute! Check out 1-800-flowers.com. They hire people to process orders from home. It's a good for real deal!

Try Etsy for selling your stuff online. Or, you can try CafePress or Zazzle. Etsy is a marketplace. CafePress and Zazzle are places where you can get your creative juices to work, and sell your own creative designs, without spending a dime. All of these sites are free.

You can go to Gazelle, if you have any old electronics you want to sell. You just input what you have and they will get you a quote in seconds. They even pay for your postage.

You can work online with ChaCha or Weegy. If you have a landline phone, as well as internet, you can work with Arise or LiveOps.

Lastly, if you haven't signed up for an email points program, I would sign up for MyPoints. I have been with them for a few years now, and if you have a good memory, or are willing to write stuff down, you can rack up points by doing a lot of their free trial memberships and then canceling before the end of the trial membership. You will still get your points, and no one loses out. I would use a free email service, like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail, though, because you will be generating a lot of spam after you sign up for offers. If you sign up for webmail, if doesn't get downloaded to your computer and it can go to your spam folder. You control what goes into your inbox.

There is another paid email one, but it takes awhile to get paid - it's called Inbox Dollars. Same idea as MyPoints, but you get paid cash instead.

So, there you have it, some of my best ideas. God Bless, and let me know if you need help with anything.

I sure would like to help. If I knew of an on-line position, I'd pass it on to you.
What types of work can you and/or your husband do? Put an ad on craigslist for your services. Driving? Personal shopper/personal assistant? Baby sitting? Handyman type work?

Wow, what a horrible situation. I would love to help as much as I can, so I am heading out now to comment on your stuff. I know that isn't going to get you 2000.00, but every little bit helps. Have you talked to the people who run the storage unit and asked if they could help you with a payment plan so that you can have more time to get the money to them? I'll be praying for you and commenting on your material. I hope that everything goes your way.

Friend me and send me messages everytime you post here and I will comment as much as possible. I also am in need, but not nearly as bad as you. I do online work to make money as I am a stay at home mom of 2 and my fiances son. We live on one income and most of that goes to rent. Have you tried to get state assistance? You should be able to qualify for something. My sites that i do are not very fast at making money but you will make money at them if you are interested. I would also suggest posting pictures of your work on Gather, and maybe places like myspace, facebook, tagged, yahoo360...etc. You can get a lot of traffic that way. I personally have not tried it but I've heard that you can make money setting up your own site through Squidoo. This could also be a way to get traffic to your stuff. I'll put my list of sites together and send them to you, then you can ask questions if you need to. I wish you lot's of luck. I really hope things work out for you.

Here are a couple of ideas. But 1st let me say, when dealing with unemployement several factors play out.

1) If his former employers (the ones that claimed poverty and laid him off) claim he quit, he isn't eligible. SO VERIFY or better yet go IN PERSON to verify WHY no check yet. It may be due to something they (former employers) have reported. You can usually clear things like that up.

2) E-Bay for selling things online. Once you have sold a few items request (it's free) a Paypal Debit Card. Then you NEVER have to wait for pymt and can use it ANYWHERE Visa or Mastercard are accepted. Your earnings are always IMMEDIATELY on it and available.

3) Are there any corner spots, farmers markets or Flea Markets in the area? Any of those could be utilized on the weekends.

4) Most places have at least ONE newspaper where you can place an article for FREE. You and hubby sit down and work on a cute eye catching article about "Hubby for Hire". Have a set of pricing ready, and list can help with Yard Work, Taking down Christmas Decorations, Moving Etc.

It won't be all you need, but may be enough to help a bit.

Good Luck!

Anna, I may have an idea for you. This info was on the local news a few weeks ago. The government is preparing for the 2010 National Census and is hiring thousands to work in the field. The pay (in CA anyway) is very good and may be elsewhere too. Go to http://www.census.gov/hrd/www/index.html and look for a census office in a city near your area. They only want you to work where you live and a test is required ahead of time. It is simply a test of common sense and not too hard. See what you can find out and let me know. God bless you.

I agree with many of the previous posts. See if you can make a partial payment to the storage company and buy some time to make your payments current so you can get your items.

In the meantime, deal with the unemployment office and keep at it until your husband can start collecting his money.

You might see if you can babysit also to make some money from home.

Donna has some good ideas for making money. Even though property is selling for less than previously and takes longer, pretty much ALL online options - unless you have GOOD stuff people want to buy on Ebay - like cameras or perhaps interesting stuff from the 50s, 760s, 70s, etc...collectibles - really doesn't pay more than chump change.

go to this site, scroll down to the bottom where it says Atlanta---you will see Freelance Marketplace and a bunch of links. Try some of these...they are legit, and all are work at home. Hope this helps.

If you gave up a huge house on ten acres and your husband's own business, then your mother should loan you $2,000. Isn't she the reason you moved near her? Otherwise, I do not have a clue what to tell you as many folks are having financial difficulties. Good luck. Salud

Try your local Catholic church. Every Catholic church has a St. Vincent de Paul Society to help people through temporary financial difficulty. You do not need to be Catholic, only to live within the parish boundaries. If and when your finances improve, they would appreciate a donation, but that, too, is not necessary.

I think Donna F's advice is sensible. Check with family members. Someone may be waiting to be asked for help.

Thank you to all who have posted here, and given me a list of options to try. I knew if there were any place I could depend on help it would be here.

I do want to clarify something though:
My mother was the first one I turned to, because we did give up so much to come here for her, but she has gotten into a financial situation that none of us had been aware of, and now owes even more than her properties are worth. She even has a second mortgage none of us knew about. As for my siblings, one is going through a divorce, one just filed bankruptcy, and the other is currently unemployed (we helped him out too, until the money ran out.)
I have tried all other avenues, before I took this step.
We can't even sell any of our own belongings because they are all in storage. What we do have here is not even worth trying to sell.
We went to the unemployment office today and found out that the problem has to do with the employer, but not that they have claimed he was fired. It seems that so far none of the 38 men have received a check, and no one is telling us when we will get one, or the reason for the problem.

I dont have much ideas, but have you thought of cleaning houses, or catering kids parties???? Open up a daycare in your home..There is money in childcare... We have a program here with the welfare... they will find the kids for you to sit with and they pay you for this.... it is up to you the hours that you want to work... but your pay is from the government so you do get paid..

swagbucks.com
how does swagbucks work exactly?

Swagbucks is a search engine. Search with Swagbucks (or one of their other sister sites) and you could win 1 to 5 swagbucks (or more with current Mega Bucks promotion) which you can redeem for GCs and other prizes. And now they have Swag Codes for instand swagbucks. I search using Swagbucks (a few minutes a day) and usually win 1 to 3 Swagbucks per day. No extra time, and no extra effort. Get an Amazon $5 GC for as little as 45 swagbucks. (
Invite friends or family to join under you and when your friend wins a Swag Buck so will you! Win what your friends win, up to 100 Swag Bucks for each friend you invite.

There is no restriction on the number of family members that can join, but you might have to clear cookies or use different computers to maximize the possibilities of winning swagbucks. I have read where some people do a few searches in the morning, then afternoon and again in the evening to win multiple times per day. I win multiple times in one day, if I log in say morning and evening.
There are other "sister" sites that offer some of the same rewards as well as specific gifts for that site (like the soap site has posters and key chains for some soap operas). I started using Soaptown but found that some rewards cost more (like the Amazon GCs costs 60 swagbucks using Soaptown). I'm so sorry Anne, I didn't realize that your mother had so many difficulties - yes, you are in a terrific fix - and I do not know how you can get $2,000 in a month without personal loans - or selling off something worth that much. You said you had $60,000 worth of things in storage - it would be nice if you could somehow hock some of those things to pay off the bill. Maybe the owner of the storage place can work with you. I'm sure you have exhausted all options - I can only say I hope things work out for the best.

Anne, I understand hard times..... 2008 was one of the toughest years we have had yet. I live in Mass and things are horrible here right now, we just went through the worst ice storm in my lifetime (Dec 11) and lost power in Central MA for days.. Unitil sucks and could care less if we were freezing... some people still have no cable or internet, at least they got their electric back. I lost one of my cats to the cold, he got sick and could not hang on. My husband had to bury him in the back yard, Christmas did not exist for my children this year, we did not even put up our tree, they woke up to squat on Christmas morning. I was able to fill their stockings with cheap candy and my husband broke down on Christmas eve and bought them a 50.00 visa gift card so they would atleast have one present. I wish I could write you a check for 2000.00 to help with your woes, but I am unemployed myself, since sept and I am fighting to keep my unemployment because of a 3 week overpayment back in 06 when shit started hitting the fan... We almost lost our house and when it went into forclosure they put it in the local paper and the rest of my husbands family read it and got pissed off because my Mother in law lives with us in the house my husband grew up in.. Instead of trying to help they bitch piss and moan and now wont talk to my husband.. I was able to save the house by qualifying for the rewrite program they passed in October.. It only lowered my payment by 200.00 bucks but got us out of foreclosure. I wish you luck in raising the cash to atleast keep the storage mongers at bay, I will comment on your stuff, hope it helps and wish I could do more...

Ann, I'd been wondering where you've been. I guess you know my situation, fighting a mean and rotten Social Security Judge for disability. I've been unemployed for over two years. My wife's ex place of work, restructured and laid off those not willing to take a cut in pay to stay working.... then they had the audacity to hire new people to do what my wife and her best friend did... the managing and training... paying them more than twice what either the wife or friend made, after working there for nearly 20 years. Bastards!

We are just barely hanging on and living from day to day, on credit cards, of all the UnGodly things to have to do.

I'd definitely check out some of those sites mentioned above. Maybe, I'll do the same myself. I hate selling anything on ebay, as it's costing more all the time.

Cafepress.come can put photos or your pictures on lots of items and you set the price. But, even though the clothing and other items are of good quality, it makes for expensive items. Cafepress, is the one making the bucks, mainly.

I am so sad for you and all the others above, who are barely scraping by. And Col. .. your remark was entirely uncalled for, ya arrogant a-hole. Perhaps one day YOU will find yourself destitute or in dire need of help. ( OH I DO HOPE SO!! ) Don't come here asking for help.

Ann, I will be praying for you and your husband. I have many good people on my prayer list and I am dreadfully sorry that I can't be of more help, than just being a friend.

God Bless you, my friend.

Geez! When it rains it pours doesn't it! I think we've all been there. Personally, I've lost EVERYTHING I own in a storage unit due to the same case as yours and had to start all over from scratch. It sucks and it hurts and it feels like you're losing a part of you that you can never get back! I'm feeling ya!

You might try westathome.com. They're like the previously mentioned liveops. I'm hitting all your material now in hopes of sending some points your way.

Also, I can't promise they'll sell because the economy bites everywhere, but I manage a small flower and gift shop here in my town if you'd like to send down a few pieces of your jewelery to put in on consignment. If you'd like to give it a try, please just send me a message and I'll give you the address and we'll work out the details.

I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time. I wish I could do more, as I've walked a few gazillion miles in your shoes. Big hugs and many blessings.

Also, NO PROMISES but if you send me some photos and prices of some of your pieces I can see if our owner will buy some outright for resell. She doesn't usually work that way (most of our jewelry is on a consignment basis) but it's worth a try!

Hi there - I ran into one of your photos a little while ago and was really impressed and just wanted to tell you that you started off my night in a good way.

I've been going through the rest of your photos too, sending 10's and commenting so I hope it helps you some. Maybe when people see my comments scroll through their feeds they'll want to see what I was talking about and come take a look too. That's what I love about the feeds on Gather!

I wish you all the luck in the world... it's so hard to be stressed out -- I know how that feels. I have been looking for legitimate ways to earn money as well and have posted some of my own articles asking people for advice so you might find some tips on my pages too... who knows.

I'm going to read through everyone's comments here now to see if anything can help me out. Thanks again and good luck!

You can sell books and CDs, DVDs, etc. at Amazon. My son has been doing that with his stuff and doing quite well.

I'd check out the site Modest Needs. Here's some of what it says on their site: Founded in 2002, Modest Needs is an award-winning public charity with a simple but critical mission: we work to stop the cycle of poverty BEFORE it starts for the low-income workers whom conventional philanthropy has forgotten.

We do this by empowering compassionate members of the general public to safely and securely help hard-working, low-income households to afford the kinds of short-term emergency expenses that we've all encountered before: the unexpected car repair, the unanticipated visit to the doctor, or the unusually large heating bill, for example.

All I can say is a change of thinking is in order.
Stuff comes and stuff goes. Money is only a tool.
Instead of steak eat hamburger, and who needs two cars anyhow.

Do not fall for fast talkers and there scams, and if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is a lie. Learn to be happy with little then when something falls in your lap who cares if it is gone.... You can not take it with you when you die.

When one is desperate as you appear to be this is when the wolves will circle, then they may attack.....

If there were a good paying online job out there - we would all be doing it already.
Some of the sites listed are good ideas - but will not raise the kind of money you need.
I understand the storage company won't let you get your stuff out until you're paid up - but if and when you can do that - I would suggest that maybe some of those heirlooms, which you obviously don't have room for anyway, could be sold at auction. Not the best of times to try to sell, but something to think about for future - I am sure you have friends in your old area who could help.
My boyfriend got laid off / quit/ fired, at the end of September - unemployment kept 'losing' his paperwork (he did it all online), and he didn't get his first check til late November. And then only in bits and pieces.
We are trying to get by in the meantime with my $700 pension check. Barely covers mortgage and utilities.
You may be able to get some help through assistance (even if only food stamps), but may clear up some other expense, so you could then use that cash to redeem your things. I would definitely think the storage guy would accept what you can give him and maybe work something out.... unless he is looking at the big picture and what your things are worth - then I guess you're just out of luck.
Sorry, pretty much in the same boat here.

Pleading with the owner of the storage complex, try the manager first and then go to the owner. Tell them when your money will be in and how much you can give to him on the balance and to please be patient with you, that you will get it all paid and that you have family stuff in their that you have no intention of letting go. Do your best soft shoe. If you can be realistic with him and write it down and sign it for him, sometimes it works and you get cut a break. They do not want to have to sell your stuff in these bad financial times. They would rather get paid. Just do not sit silent and let it happen. Wheel and deal to save it. If your written plan changes, write a new one but keep them current and be honest. If your stuff goes for sale, get in there and buy the most important stuff back yourself. The least damage possible is the goal. It seems you and your family have a lot of assets, just they are"underwater" in loans taken out on them already. The stimulous package for the people has some solutions coming on that underwater situation if you can just tread water for 3 more months, but 3 months can be such a long time. Being as thankful as you can for the land, house, assets you have no matter how at risk they are, will help you think more clearheaded about how to survive this. Do not let depression make you do something desperate when just 3 more months may fix this mess for you. Stay positive and keep scratching and eat lots of soup. Maybe you could board some horses for people, or dogs or cats, or raise some chickens to sell eggs, put in a truck garden as soon as possible for farmer's markets in the spring. People are losing their homes and need placed to board their critters before giving them up completely. Get in touch with pet rescue services and see if you can get paid by them for taking in critters and to also have a place to get rid of any boarded horses/critters you end up with where the person boarding it cannot come back and get it. There is free critter food available to people taking them is tooplus the money. There are so many abandoned pets that areas that do not euthenize are running out of places to put them. You could be paid to be that place. Just some randon thoughts that might help.

Anne, I am so sorry. There are some good suggestions - try to straight out unemployment, check out the local and online resources mentioned herein. Speaking to the storage facility seems imperative.

One online money making resource I did not see mentioned was associatedcontent.com - you write 400 or more word poems, product reviews, stories, news articles, or how to type articles and they offer you cash via paypal and pay out about once a week. They only pay a few dollars per article but if you and your husband (or even your daughter if you feel that she could) can write a lot in the next few weeks, you can earn cash quickly. It should be in your name and not your husbands not to mess up his unemployment checks once they get straightened out.

I will visit your content tonight and this week to attempt to gain you some points and I will email if I think of anything else. If you have any questions about associatedcontent please email or ping me. Best wishes to you and your family Anne.

I hate to mention this, but it sounds like you were at one time fairly affluent. Are you wearing a diamond wedding set? Try pawning them, if you are. That should get you at least a month or two pass on losing the stuff in storgage. I know it will be hard to do, but its an idea.

Anne, I'm so sorry you're going through this. I don't have any practical options to offer, but I'll go comment and rate, to help give you a couple of points here. Granted, it won't do much, but added to what everyone else is doing, maybe it will help a bit.

This economy really sucks. I've been wanting to move my jewelry making from "hobby" to "business", but I think that's a few years off. And I used to have my mom living with me. So I really do understand where you're coming from. Hang in there.
