Once again here are the Perspective fearless predictions for 2009
Politics
1. There will be an assassination attempt on Barack Obama. (Let's face it folks, this one don't take no brains to figure out!)
2. Russia will be at serious odds with Ukraine and Europe over gas and oil. (Again a no brainer!)
3. The world-wide economic situation will not be as bad or last as long as first thought.
4. Oil will settle at 50 to 70 dollars a barrel for the next few years.
5. Some of the shine will fall from China's image in the world. A faltering economy.
Social
1. Social networking will start to lose it's appeal on the Internet.
2. Religious strife between Christians and Muslims will increase.
3. The Rolling Stones will be no more due to health reasons.
4. Major medical break throughs (especially cancer) led by an advance in genetics.
5. The poor economy will provide a major boost to the entertainment industry.
Tech
1. A revolution in so-called cloud services and computing, in which software and other applications are delivered to end-users over networks, or "the cloud."
2. Like cloud computing, "virtualization" helps companies reduce the cost of operating machines such as servers. The technology basically allows a single piece of hardware to run systems or applications that previously had run on multiple machines - essentially allowing companies to squeeze more out of existing hardware and even defer new purchases.
3. No matter how bad things get out there, American consumers are unlikely to part with their broadband connections, an Accenture study found. Indeed, they are more likely to get rid of cable television channels (once considered practically a utility) or their mobile phones than their high-speed Internet connections.
4. With SMEs being hit by the credit crunch perhaps harder than anyone and yet having the same need for up-to-date tech as other companies, 2009 could well be the year that 'free as in beer' software takes off. There are already a handful of software companies providing their services to SMEs ostensibly free to the customer, using advertising to make their money.
5. Mobile broadband beats fixed. Australia's incumbent telco Telstra has already gone live with a 21Mbps mobile network while Vodafone in Europe is testing a 28.8Mbps equivalent - I predict it won't be long until the UK's operators launch their super speedy networks on the unsuspecting British public. dito for North America.

Thanks for sharing.
Happy New Year
Social 4 = There is a fix for type 1 diabetes being researched at UCSF. Right now the shot only fixes and repairs the damage done to the body by type 1 diabetes and insulin injections and then it fades until gone by 5 years. The fix requires wider stem cell availability to research on to get what they need and then it will be about a year until the good lasting shot happens. Don't know how long until they let it go public, but this has been researched and tried on the 1 to 5 year version for long enough now to count. This would save the life of my oldest daughter who has been diabetic since 3-4 (born 1969) and just had a heart triple bypass this year. She will die younger without that shot and she cannot have a child because of the stress on the already insulin/diabetes body of hers (see Steel Magnolias for a visual) and with this shot she could have a child if she still wants one by them. That stem cell research is so close. Just the Bush/relisous right laws are stopping its progress into saving the life of my daughter. May the religous right backers get what they dish out. They have condemmed my daughter to an earlier death.
Tech 5 = Obama said (in one of those What- I-Would-Do-With-The-Stimulous-Package brief comments) that he was going to exand Broadband. My phone service, Trinsic, said my area was due in about a year to get Broadband and if Obama gets on this project, I really will have it in a year - Yeah!. Satellite internet is good but their corporate structure insulates them from the crooks they hire as service companies and they know it and do nothing so the internet is full of complaints about it and I was burned twice for like $600+ each time, once by Hughes and once by Wild Blue. The land line is so slow but if your phone works, it works and their is enough social pressure that phone lines are never down for long even in the boonies. Companies do not have any real pride in quality of service any more and there is just not enough public/legal pressure to make Hughes and Wild Blue make their installers/repair people be honest brokers, and that makes Hughes and Wild Blue not honest brokers. From what I understand Broadband is over those phone lines but with different lines and boxes on the poles. I will be so happy to be able to download videos and music again- Yeah!
If this happens I will be famous.
What inspires your predictions? Do you have a gut feeling or is it based on analysis (particularly wondering about #3 Politics!)
A couple of weeks ago I would have said NO WAY to the first one. I would have thought our Secret Service would never, ever, ever let anyone get close enough to do such a thing. However, after that guy in Iraq was able to throw not one, but two shoes at President Bush I think our presidential security is in need of a serious upgrade.
I hope you are wrong about 1 and right about 3. By the way, 2 is happening right now. Apparently, Russia has just cut off Ukraine's oil.
