Caroline Kennedy Didn't Ask Me But---

There are so many things I could tell her if she asked. For one, I'd ask her why in the world she wants to get into the Senate scene? Doesn't she know about the stress that can cause? If she does go there, by Governor Patterson's decree, she'll need a lot of my advice to keep her in a healthy condition.

Do You Think She Knows? 

Sometimes it can take 6 years to approve legislation. Yeah, six years. Does she really want to be in a city of lots of gridlock for that long? That's if she is appointed and then elected in 2010.

I wonder if she knows that it can take six years or how many bills introduced are never voted on. I read that the 109th Congress introduced 6,436 pieces of legislation and only 316 were approved and signed.

If Carolyn asked me, I'd advise her to stay in New York and write to her Congressmen; or get a petition going to send to her Congressmen; or get a phone bank bombarding her Congressmen to get things done for NY. She'd probably get a piece of Legislation passed much faster that way.

I'd tell her to work for New York from NY. I have a suspicion that Hillary Clinton is thrilled to get out of there. She wasn't able to accomplish much of anything during her few years. She didn't even get a committee chairperson spot.

If Caroline Kennedy asked me, I tell her to go back to doing what she does best. Whatever she thinks that is.

And So 

That's what I'd tell her, if Caroline Kennedy asked me.

The Kennedies were all brought up on public service. Being part of the campaign she caught the family bug. I wish her well. A little idealism isn't a bad thing. She may even bring back the Camalotian question. Does might make right or should it do right? She will need humor to succeed. new York could do worst.

Don't know why she wants to either, but if she decides she wants the job, it's a done deal. I know it and you know it. Maybe she thinks she needs to keep a Kennedy in politics which would be an ego thing. But I'll bet she's smarter than that. Her Mom worked really hard to keep her kids out of the spotlight and now Caroline seems to want the spotlight.

I'm not convinced she'll go over in upstate New York. Hillary has the skills to talk to people and swig a beer. I know when she was here in town a few years ago she willingly met with a grassroots group that showed up and asked for a few minutes of her time. One woman that was there said she was attentive to their message and asked questions. Can Caroline do that?

Another Kennedy trying to make her mark. It is sad that these politicians go in thinking that they can make a change or make a difference only to realize that it is the lobbyists who actually run the country.

Kennedy would not make a good Senator now. I live in NY and and just bcause she's done some good with her charities and helping the school system does not mean she can help run the state.

I think if Caroline Kennedy asked me, I would tell her that she isn't her father, and she isn't her brother. She has done well behind the scenes, but the country knows her best as the only surviving member of Camelot. They also know her as giving out awards at the Kennedy Center, but what else does she do? She leads a pretty private life, as far at the American public knows. Caroline, please get some other experience under your belt and then get elected the way most other senators get elected. Work your way up the ladder. Your name can only carry you so far.

Since becoming a Congressman makes millionaires out of the ones that weren't before they were sworn in to office, that would be my biggest reason to try to be appointed Senator. Obviously, that's not Caroline's motivation.
Probably she's been bred on the political/social obligation to the people all her life. She should realize that as a freshman senator, her only real contribution will be to gather a little support for her projects for later.

Actually, I think Uncle Ted probably got to her and told her she owes it to the memory of her father and the Kennedy family to take the position. I really don't think she wants it. She's such a private person.

From the news tonight looks like she dropped out. So what do you think of Fran Dressher as NY Senator? I personally don't see that either but then I am not very familiar with NY so maybe she would do fine.

I was surprised that Caroline stepped out of her very private life and even considered a career in politics. Politics has not been kind to the Kennedys. Caroline can afford to do anything she wants. I think she can do more good in fundraising. She might be a good foreign ambassador.

I've read two stories regarding her decision to back out. One says she is dropping her bid due to her uncle's poor health and the other says she backed out when personal financial disclosure was required.

Jen, I think Fran Drescher would be as good as any of the others considered to replace Hillary. I heard her remark yesterday that if she isn't appointed, she plans to run in 2010. Good for her.

I think, as the only Kennedy survivour just about, not totally, she feels the onus is upon her to carry on. But her life and her own problems must take prescedence and she is a wise woman to accept that fact.

She's pulled herself out. I thought she'd have done just fine. She's certainly bright enough, and cares enough, but I do think she's have been tied down, and her best talents would go untilized had she gotten the position, so I'm glad she's frre up to do her best work.

Given what she has been through in her life (her dad and uncle dying five years apart in the same manner), her brother and sister in law dying in a plane crash 10 years ago this coming July and now the health problems of her other uncle, I thought that sounding the retreat was not only smart, it was prudent. Will she run in 2010? Who knows?

I agree with you Kerrell but I also wonder if something came up in the 'veting' process that she might not want to have revealed. That and or, the Gov told her he had not selected her and gave her the option to remove herself rather than be a loser.

Wonder if we'll ever know. I'm sure if it had been a member of the Bush family, it would be all over the media.

So very true. We have a man here named Nieman who does just that. Ted gets far more done then any of Congress or Senate do. He's not always right in my book, but he does get things do. He gets thousands of signatures. That forces the vote to come up.

I heard a lot of stories on t.v. the other night about why Caroline withdrew....including one about her supposedly having an "affair." Oh brother.......then, it was said that her husband (a well known lawyer) had told her if she got the Senate job, their marriage was over........hmmmmmmmm........rather interesting, eh????? Politics is soo "cut throat" anymore.

My guess? Caroline was thinking about her father. That's a heck of a burden for a daughter to shoulder all these years. It's funny how your relationships with parents haunt you. After my novel WALTZING COWBOYS was released, one reader at a book club event asked me if my father was in the novel. I hadn't thought of it, but in reflection, she was right on. Very problematic relationship as adults, even though he was a great father when I was young. Strong on responsibility and support for kids. What an advantage that kind of parent is from a confidence building point of view.
