Mercury is widely present in the environment. So nearly everyone may be exposed to low levels of mercury in the air, water & food.
You are usually exposed in 2 ways - fish (including shellfish), and dental filings.
Those pretty bright silver filings in your mouth can be slowly poisoning you. It's been used by dentists for 160 years, but even back in 1840 it was considered unethical for a dentist to use mercury in a patient. Now it is approved of by the ADA, but most likely because if they say it is harmful to people - they would have a huge ton of lawsuits on their hands!
Mercury vapors can be released during chewing, brushing and when contacted with hot or acidic foods.
One study reported on levels of mercury vapors measured in a mouth after chewing. The mercury vapor level was 54 times higher in the mough of the person with the amalgam filings vs the individual without them.
It is physically impossible for mercury to be "loved in" the filing when placed in the teeth. The U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services lists mercury as the 3rd most toxic substance know to mankind!
Mercury may induce an autoimmune response leading to lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple scleroris or thyroiditis
Some symptoms of mercury exposure are:
- Tremors in fine voluntary movements, such as handwriting
- Depression, fatigue, increased irritability, moodiness & nervous excitability
- Inability to concentrate and loss of memory
- Insomnia or drowsiness
- Nasusea & diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Birth defects and miscarriage
- Nephritis or symptoms of kidney disease
- Pneumonitis
- Swollen gland and tongue
- Ulcerations of oral mucosa
- Sore & ulcers in the mouth
- Dark pigmentation of the gums & loosening of teeth
Can you see the half-moons on your fingernails? Your fingernails, I guess, are the windows of your body. If they are not visible it is commonly a sign on mercury poisoning. There is never a half-moon on your pinkie finger though.
Do you sweat when you work out or exhert yourself? If not, it could also be a sign of mercury poisoning.
So what can you do to remove mercury from your system?
- Limit pork & fatty beef
- Increase fiber to 3-40 grams per day
- 2 quarts of water daily
- Eat unsweetened yogurt or take lactobacillis acidophilis & bifidus
- Less caffeine
- Use a sauna (start out slowly 5-10 minutes to begin with)
- Give up chewing gum (unless you have no amalgam filings
There are also some supplements that can help aid your body in getting rid of mercury.
If you choose to start having your mercury filings(amalgam) removed, find a dentist that knows how to do this safely as you don't want all that dust & crap going into your body as they are removing it from your teeth.
Most of this information can be found in the book: What You Don't Know May Be Killing You
by: Don Colbert M.D.
Me, I cannot see the half-moons on almost all of my fingers. I do have mercury filings too.

Angela - I eat tuna a few times a month and I don't seem to have any reaction to it, but I know it has mercury in it.
I have a mouthful of fillings, but I very rarely eat any seafood.
Thimerosal in Seasonal Influenza Vaccine
What is thimerosal?
Thimerosal is a very effective preservative that has been used since the 1930s to prevent contamination in some multi-dose vials of vaccines (preservatives are not required for vaccines in single dose vials). Thimerosal contains approximately 49% ethylmercury. There is no convincing evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site. However, in July 1999 the Public Health Service (PHS) agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and vaccine manufacturers agreed that thimerosal should be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure.
If a person wants to have them removed then they need to research & find a dentist that does this removal in the correct way.
Informative post, thank you!
It is hard to document the effects of small amounts of mercury in the environment, but not impossible, and people are working on it.
I commented on your comment - Victoria. Are you in that area?
Back when I had dental insurance, my dentist did suggest that I get my fillings removed.
You are just filled with great information.
