What is Boxing Day? It would appear that Rob beat me to the answer, but that does not decrease the purpose behind this post. (It just illustrates that I like to sleep in on Boxing Day.)
This is the day after Christmas, but I'm not sure anyone knows where the name comes from. I've been asked many times. My favourite answer is that it's the day we bring our "boxes" back for return... the presents we didn't like. There is a similar story about how it was the day when the upper class would give gifts to their servants. For us, it's the big day of after-Christmas sales and shopping. In some parts of the country it is a legal holiday, and Boxing Day Sales have morphed into Boxing Week Sales.
There have been a number of posts on different greetings lately, some of which have been found "offensive". Maybe that's why Boxing Day came into being, and why it is still hanging around. I hope that when I wish you all a "Happy Boxing Day" it is taken in all the spirit of celebration that it is intended.
