Officer Shoots Rape Suspect

MAITLAND -- A Maitland police officer shot a rape suspect late Monday
evening.

The 55-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released, is now at
Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

Maitland police officials said two female officers responded to a
rape call at the Gem Lake Apartments around 11:15 p.m. Monday.

Once inside the apartment, police said the suspect made an aggressive
move toward the officer and that's when the officer shot the suspect
three times.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the
shooting. The officer who shot the suspect is now on administrative
leave. Her name has not been released.

First of all, officers are always placed under investigation any time they end up shooting a suspect. However, without knowing the full story, it's hard to say whether three shots was excessive or not. My dad was a police officer for many years and they were trained to keep shooting as long as the suspect was still posing a threat. So, did he have a weapon on him? Was he still advancing on the officers? There is so much more to know before determining whether the officer's actions were warranted or not.
