Powerful. Poetic. Revolutionary.
There are some singers who make you stop in your tracks, sit up, take note. That is the case with Taina Asili.
She put out four albums internationally with the band Antiproduct and can also be heard on the album Love and Revolution by the Puerto-rock band Ricanstruction. Most recently, she worked with La Banda Rebelde on their debut album, Mama Guerrilla.
Hers is an amazingly powerful voice, and she draws upon a rich heritage. She speaks from tradition and weaves together struggles past and present into a sound that leaves audiences entranced. As her biography says, she "carries a fire breathing voice of rage and resistance to venues, festivals, conferences and political events across the country. She weaves resistance, anti-colonialist struggle, love, identity, reclamation of the body, ancestral remembrance, and more into an unparalleled vocalization style melding poetry and song."
Her soulful voice breathes a blend of hip hop, rock, neo-soul, flamenco and Afro-Caribbean sounds. World-infused, fire breathing, soulful, revolutionary song pours forth and washes over the listener.
The power of her voice is evident on recordings, but hearing her live is breathtaking. It leaves one with the sensation of having walked through a raging fire without getting burned.
