This morning my husband told me I could go finish Christmas shopping, as he needed to sleep in a bit before work. I was able to get 20 minutes of sleep after the boys got up and before I had to be out the door, after a night of almost no sleep.
I decided to bring Sky, as he had a present to pick out, and I also knew this would mean that my husband got more rest and I had more shopping time. It seemed like a perfect solution!
We dropped of Roshane, who was completely excited about his field trip to a farm today, and then we went to Walmart to get a duck for Christmas. I was in luck as there were quite a few to choose between, and I think it cost 11 dollars. I got prunes and a few other items, that I noticed was cheaper at Walmart than at the grocery store. I considered buying milk and juice there, but in the end I decided not to, as the grocery store was my last stop.
Then of course, we came to the baby section, and no there was no clothes for Sky. Looking at the prices make me wonder how anyone can afford to buy clothes there. I surely get much better prices and quality at JC Penney as long as I look for a good deal.
Since we were in Walmart, I knew I had to go take a look at the fabric section. I immediately saw a sign that said 75 percent off, and I felt like I was in a dream country. I took out my calculater and started figuring out the exact prices. I then asked the lady there, if it was only the top shelf that was on sale. To my surprise she told me that all their fabric was 75 percent off, as they will be closing down the fabric section. I was excited and happy at the same time. I go to walmart maybe 4 times a year, but I really do love their fabric section.
I ended up letting Skyler choose some fabric, so that I can make him a new cover for his small comforter and for his pillow, and of course I had to pick one out for Roshane as well. I got 4 yards of the Thomas fabric and 4 yards of the Cars fabric both at $1.11 per yard. I would never be able to buy character fabric at full price, but they both need new covers, so they were in luck.
I bought two yards on some pretty pinkish rustic flower fabric that I am going to make a new comforter cover for my niece's dolls. When she turned one I made her a pillow and a comforter for her dolls, and this will be perfect for a new set of sheets.
So yes, I went in for the duck and I ended up spending $9.86 on fabrics as well, that is what I call the Walmart trap. Fortunately I had a 15 dollar gift card from Freeride, so that made me feel less guilty.
Of course, I know I will have to get my hands on another Walmart gift card, so that I can go shopping after Christmas before they close down the department in January.
Sky and I continued on to the dollar store to get Christmas cards and cookie tins before we headed for the grocery store. At the grocery store right around the corner for us, I had my final list made out. However, when I got there I realized that they had basically closed down the dairy aisle. The lights were out and very few items were left. No milk, no cheese and no orange juice....arghh!!! I knew I should have picked these up at Walmart. To make me less annoyed, it turned out that they had marked some packages of veggies down a whole lot, so I was able to find lots of apples, bananas and mangos for very little. I am craving a smoothie.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my husband will call to tell me that he can pick Roshane up from school, as the three mile walk seems awful at this moment. I just want to eat lunch and take a nap.
Do you do your grocery shopping at Walmart? Do you fall into the Walmart trap, when you are there?

I don't grocery shop there though as we don't have groceries at ours.
The store is dirty, understaffed, and the prices are not worth the hassle.
Jessie, I actually think Walmart is more expensive than our grocery stores.
Mary, I was excited about the sale, but sad that the department is closing down.
Nora, I strongly prefer Target as well, but it sure has a way of trapping me as well:)
I had a smoothie for breakfast an apricot banana one
Courtney, it really is a shame that they are closing it down. All the other crafts stores are so expensive. I will definitely have to go get some more deals.
Nellie, that sure was a great deal!
Thanks Leah!
Carolyn, I'm sure it is pretty handy to have your son working there:) When I was in high school, I used to work for a supermarket, and I got a discount as well.
Wal-Mart Used to have great deals but now there is no great deals.
They charge so much for stuff that is not of good quality.
They have become like K-mart. Dirty and over priced.
And PAyless shoes is headed that way too.
I agree with the kid's clothing prices--I prefer Sears clearance for my son's clothes. I can get fantastic deals when I spend the time looking.
We buy a few groceries there, but not too many. When it comes to clothes, we buy clothes for Elliott sometimes from Walmart if they are on clearance but that's about it. JCPenney never has anything on clearance in his size that is a good deal. We don't have any regular children's clothing stores either. Most of his clothes come from the clearance section at the BX or KMart.
I like Big Y for their much larger selection of organic choices. But their prices tend to be much higher.
But I've been trying to do better by using my $1 off & higher coupons there! (The ones Kroger's doesn't double here!)
I've also been going to Kroger's about 1x/week to do the other coupons!
I will call the closest one though and see if they are closing their fabric section too. 75% off is well worth the trip.
Duck sounds good!
I heard that they are closing the fabric section in my walmart too. No one sews anymore.
However, the grocery store has weekly sales, where as Walmart doesn't, so I usually spend $20-50 less without coupons. Then, to top that off, Walmart won't double coupons, but the other store does.
So, I'll grab a few small things at Walmart if I'm there, but I don't grocery shop there. It's too expensive.
Heck - you earned a gift card and I got a great deal - exactly what the boys wanted and it is useful - now you made it beautiful by finding a fabric they like! Then you still have to do the work and swe the cover - so what pray tell do yo have to feel guilty about?!
You rock, mamasita:)
FWIW I refuse to shop at Walmart!
