As I gazed into my mirror,
I caught a reflection of yesterday.
You had your truce flag waving,
with that double indemnity smile.
I thought I heard you whisper,
“I haven’t seen you in a while”.
You used to desecrate me,
with your incontinent despot ways.
You consecrated all that was evil,
and wasted my life away.
So I guess you’ve come calling,
for the penance that you’re due.
Wasting my soul, bleeding the whole of me,
In this vacuous hell you’ve contrived,
Until nothing can survive, without vice.
Save us purity of profound thought.
Oh, but wouldn’t that be nice, wouldn’t that
be grand; If the world became your playground,
And you became their liberator man? Hallelujah
halo falls down upon you feet, tomorrows savior.
We could run in your wicked garden,
liberated by our greed and lust,
be an errant cog in your machine while your,
mechanizations of ill device grind our bones,
to dust…

I knew the singer Tim Buckley. He had the underground hit single, 'Get On Top Of Me Woman.'
But secondly, I loved the video. I love that song. I wasn't familiar with it until last spring, and now my husband has been playing it and singing it, too. That's awesome.
Your poem is beautiful and really spotlights how the reflection of our past selves can affect our now...it is a choice afterall, one that we're not often capable of making until we achieve some hindsight. Or at least that's what your words sparked in me. An excellent write, Wade. Each reader can derive their own meaning and value...the mark of true art.
I wish for your friend peace and new adventures somewhere out there.
Donna~ Thank you and thanks for reading!
William~ Thank you. Tim Buckley was actually the father of Jeff Buckley. Look at the video again and you'll see the resemblance. Both had phenomenal vocal ranges.
Ina~ It's all good! I'm just happy you drop by. I put the video in to lure you here. Ha ha! I love it too. I've been a Jeff Buckley fan for years.
Jules~ Correct and correct. You win a prize of three days and two nights. Ha ha! You derived the full meaning of the poem succinctly. It's an "I am my own worst enemy" kind of theme and the past can come back to haunt us. Thank you for the gracious comment!
Ellen~ You have not misconstrued anything. You've derived the very essence of my intention in this piece, as usual. I was inspired by one of my favorite poets, R.S. Thomas, who wrote a great poem called "Reflections" which was about the brute honesty of a mirror. Wherein my poem is about whether the image we see is actually who we are or once were and the battle that can rage within between those two forces. Thank you so much! Your comments are always so fulfilling.
Ann M~ Thank you! That is such a nice compliment
Selene~ You are most kind. Thank you!
Flit~ Kudos from you is very rewarding. Thank you!
"with your incontinent despot ways."
