I refer of course to the Delorean that was rigged up for time travel in those darling Back to the Future movies starring Michael J. Fox, back before the guy developed the Parkinson's that has given him such a hard time recently.
Think it through, people. One of the big problems we are experiencing in our efforts to deal with climate change is that George W. Bush already spent all the money that is required by the project of redoing our economy to run on renewable rather than fossil energy. So, we rig up a Delorean, go back to 1999, and kidnap him before he can win the election. Global Warming Al becomes President. True, he might not have been able to actually do anything about global warming with a hostile Republican Congress, but at least he would not have thrown half a trillion at Iraq. Who knows, he might even have been willing to regulate the financial industry a little bit, sparing us some of the current horrors.
Of course, the problem with all this is that Obama is the result of Bush, so no Bush, no Obama. Hmm. Political Futures are the products of the political past. Inaction breeds the reaction of favoring action. But still, the wasted years, the shame, the humiliation, the bitterness. I wish there were an easier way. I hope that it is not too late already.
