Isabella has always been a name that we considered for a girl, when we were looking for names. Of course, we have two boys so the conflict with the top names list never did become a real issue. When I was pregnant with Sky, I seriously considered Isabella, if I ended up having a daughter. However, when I realized that the name Isabella was in the top 10 both in the US, and in Denmark where my family is from I decided against it.
Did you take the popularity of the name into consideration, when you were choosing your child(ren)'s name(s)?
How did you choose the names for your children? Are they named after family members?
When we had our oldest son, the deal was that my husband would chose if it was a boy, and I would chose if it was a girl. Of course we both had veto rights.
My husband chose the name Roshane, after a student of his, when he was working as a teacher in Jamaica. He says it was a very smart and hardworking student, and he gave our son this name in hopes that he too would become hardworking.
With my second pregnancy, I got to chose, and I chose the name Skyler Kai. I had always loved the name Skyler, and I did not want it to be a name that was too common. Kai was the name of a family member, who my oldest son really loved, and it is also a name of a high school friend of mine who did not care about what other people thought of him. I wish for both of my children to be confident enough in themselves to not succumb to peer pressure. Kai also means ocean in Hawaiian, and since I love the ocean it just made sense.
With our oldest son my Danish relatives had months to get used to the name before he arrived, and it quickly turned into Shane or Shaney, which was easier for them to pronounce.
Skyler Kai was actually christened in Denmark, and his name therefore had to be approved by the Church Ministry. This was quite an affair, as there were no other children named Skyler in Denmark, and we had to write letters, and connect it to Jamaica and his American relatives. Crazy, but yes he got his name. Our oldest son was Christened in the Danish Seaman's Church in New York, and fortunately we did not have to go through the approval thing.
Of course it took our Danish relatives a while to get used to the name Skyler Kai as well, but now there is just no other name that would be right for him.
Did your relatives like the name you chose for your child immediately, or did they need time to adjust?

NOPE, we picked what WE liked! We wanted names that WEREN'T so popular!

My son: Chandler is the ONLY name hubby and I both agreed on! His middle name is the same as my hubby's.
My daughter: Stephany is named after her Grandpa (my dad). She was due a week before his 50th birthday and as a kid, his older sister by 11 months always called him Stephanie (his name is Steven). Her middle name is my mom's middle name!

They liked them, but we didn't really care! LOL! The names were totally up to us!
I had wanted a name which was not "popular" because I could remember my own name being so overused when I was a kid. One particular class I was in, in seventh grade, had four Julie's out of twenty-one students. I thought that was pretty excessive!
I think it is cool how you choose Stephanie's name. I really wanted to somehow incorporate my mother's name into a girl's name if I had a girl. Her name was Bodil though, and it just doesn't cling with much. If I ever have a girl, she will receive my mother's and my name as a middle name though.
She wasn't named after anyone either.
i named my kids what i wanted not from some fancy list
Spencer, Brooke, and Hunter. Hunter is the most popular out of all of them but we still don't hear any of our kids names very often. Although my son Spencer has a friend whose name happens to be Hunter and his brother's name is Spencer. That was kind of weird.
Jess steven
Jace Joseph
ARGGHHH....
Marissa Megan
I knew Olivia was a semi popular name. I didn't care though, we didn't choose it due to popularity. She was born in '06, I wonder what ranking it was then? It was either Emily, Emma, Olivia or Elizabeth. My husband liked Olivia better than any of them. I think Rose fit the best with her first name. She is not named after anyone.
Marissa has my middle name. I have always loved the name Marissa, and that's how she got her name.
Now I wish we would have done Linnea, but it wasn't want we decided on.
Now my name has never been popular - I have only met people with my first name once or twice.
I am sad to see that it's another year without Darlene on the list.
Christopher James -- goes by Pher
Angela Marie
And everytime I see your son's name jr, I have to pause....I know 2 children by the name of Skyler, but they are both girls.
I only wanted a girl and I knew it was a girl! Her first name was Kristi (cause I liked the name) and her middle name was Michelle (after my favorite niece).
The entire time I was pregnant, I called her Kristi and everyone else called her Christopher, trying to prepare me, just in case it was a boy! But, I knew it was a girl!
When we were in the delivery room, as soon as I had her, my husband looked at me and said, "It's a Kristi".
My youngest son was a little more difficult to come up with. I really wanted another "M" name, but we couldn't agree on one. Then, I told my husband since Matthew was named after his family, the next one would be named after mine. Conner Russell. My maiden name and my grandfather's middle name.
My middle name is the same as my grandma's, Louise.
My husband on the other hand, picked one of the more popular names for the first name. If Elliott had been a girl, he would have been named Abbie. While I don't hate the name, I've never really liked the name either, so I was really glad that Elliott was a boy! lol
If we have another child, my husband gets to pick the name. One of his favorite boy's names is on the top ten list (Andrew, Drew for short), but his other favorite is Ezekiel (Zeke for short, after his great uncle), which is definitely not a common name. His other favorite girl name, besides Abbie, is Shaina, which is of course another one that isn't on any top lists.
I don't think my mom really cared for Elliott's name while I was pregnant, but she's adjusted. lol Everyone else in my family liked it ok. My family called him Abbott (Abbie and Elliott combined) the whole time I was pregnant, even after we knew he was a boy.
Mind you, walking through the city, I can tell we are starting to feel the power of American TV programmes and pop singers - we're getting a smattering of 'Britneys' and other non-traditional names here.
My relatives found out his name in the delivery room and I think they liked it... my mom cried when I told her his middle name was after my grandfather.
When we tell ppl his name they say "That is a very strong name" So I guess ppl like it!
I guess lots of people gave their child that name that year though and the following 2 years too, because it has been quite popular since. Seeing that it is 9 this year, and I think it was in the top 10 last year too.
For our son we have not decided on a name yet. He might be named after hubby but we still havn't decided. If he doesn't get hubbys first name he will probably get his middle name as a first name.
My other criteria was a name that I could pronounce and would sound similar in German.
My original first choice for a boy was Siegfried (a hero in germanic saga-the dragon slayer:) but hubby nixed that.
So we decided on Markus Patrick and a little girl would have been Kimberly.
