We have had a winter storm warning since yesterday. The snow started falling around 6:30 AM and has come down steadily all day. No surprise - this IS winter in the Northwest. The weather forecasters are saying this snow is SO DRY that it won't pack at all. Cars are having a hard time getting any traction as it is so powdery.
The local news has been going for almost 90 minutes. I get so fed up when the newscasters get all hysterical like they've never seen snow before. They have reporters out standing along the roads all over town. They are having people in outlying areas call in and say how much snow they have. "So Joe, how much snow is at your house?" "7 inches." "Oh no, you had better get up VERY early and eat a good breakfast so you can make it to work." I think most likely Joe could have figured that out himself. I finally had to turn off the mass hyperbole.
They keep asking if anyone has seen a snowplow and pretty much the answer is NO. Supposedly the town is on Code Red for the plows to be out 24/7. So WHERE are they?
The city is going to have a news conference pretty soon to "LAY OUT HOW THEY ARE GOING TO ATTACK THE SNOW!" Ok, do you think that is pretty dumb? How about send out the plows and have them go up and down the roads? Is that too complicated to figure out? Forget the news conference and just get to work!
Thanks for listening. Now would one of you come over here and shovel my driveway? I had 8.25 inches of snow as of 30 minutes ago.

Now as far as shoveling your driveway, no thanks! Several years ago when I was six months pregnant with my daughter, Washington D. C. was hit by two snowstorms. The city was a mess! What would normally have been a ten minute drive home from work for my husband turned into a six hour nightmare! In that time, I was shoveling a parking space for him to pull the car into. These spots were reserved for the residents of the housing area. I worked for two hours straight clearing it. It would have been longer but a neighbor took pity on me and helped out. I went into the house to warm up a bit and shortly thereafter my husband came home. But.........he could not park in the space I had just cleared. Some fool that didn't live there parked in it! My husband was so furious that he and another neighbor's sister when back out with the shovels and buried the car in snow! He also left a note on the car telling the owner that he was in a reserved spot and the next time he saw the car, he would have it towed!!!!!!! We never saw that car in the neighborhood again!
We officially had 6 inches in Twin Falls, but I measured 8.5 on the top of my daughter's car as I was scraping windows and using the broom on the snow.
Our storm started with rain the first evening which turned to snow so that layer of ice was really bad beneath. Then we had a full day of snow on Sunday, none on Monday but cold enough that it didn't melt. They used a snow blower around the complex three times during Tuesday and then that bit of slush froze last night and stayed frozen today. Our high today was 21, last night was 12 degrees and tonight it's 6 right now when only 10 degrees was forecast.
And, for the record, it is YOUR snow coming my way. It is 37 degrees here now. First time above freezing since Saturday. The battle is on: will the cold from Wilma win or will the warm from the beach win?
;-)
I don't usually ever watch the news either but thought I would look in tonight and see how bad it was all around town.
Bridget, I'll get back to you on that shoveling! A little boy rang my doorbell a while ago offering to do it but he was pretty small, so I told him no thank you.
How old was he? My son is almost 8 and he shoveled for us last year and he LOVED it! At that age they still think it's FUN! LOL!
:-)
I'm skipping work tomorrow to bake cookies. Wanna come down? If you start out now, you should be here by 4 am which is when it is supposed to start the big freeze and snow thing again!
Our snow over on the Olympic Peninsula is actually sticking to the ground, OMG!!!!!
(lol!)
Great rant...
I'm glad it has "warmed" up a little. It's 20 and that's the warmest it's been in a week.
True story. My daughter was 15. We left town because the snow was supposed to hit here hard. We went south and stopped to spend the night in Jackson, MS. Next morning we got up and were getting ready to leave and the snow started. Giant flakes like we'd never seen before. Off we went. Made it to the coast. Something about the muffler was not right. We were headed towards Florida, but ended up spending the night in Gulfport or Biloxi. Got a suite since we had another teenager with us and we had our dog, Mollie. Well we took the kids to the movie at the mall and went back. I swear it snowed. The beach and the highway along the beach were covered in snow. Now it was a little tricky because while the snow wasn't deep, it was impossible to see where the road was. We had to hope for the best because we had to go back to get our daughter and her friend. It didn't last all night, but it did last long enough to see it and enjoy it. We got the last rooms in the hotel and that night there were tornadoes and 100mph winds in Florida. We'd have never made it that little extra to Florida that night.
Sue*, I know you are down there at Disneyworld enjoying wonderful weather. We don't hate you TOO MUCH!
I wonder what the newscasters WOULD do if something just happened out of the blue? Oh, I know. They would discuss it for days on end, beating the subject to death til we all can't take another word. Just like they do now.
I do love your rant, LOL. Do you want me to send someone up from Florida to clear snow? I thought you people were experts at it.
We may need some of the TARP funds to pay for this stuff. I believe all competetant people have been fired by the incompetant ones so we will see a lot of mess like this everywhere.
Sure send some Florida folks up here.
Take photos of the tree. I'll never see a sight such as this in person in my lifetime probably.
Just went out and checked the thermometer on the back porch. 38*. So here's where your heat wave is, although people here are moaning about the bitter cold.
Hope you found someone to shovel your driveway. I'm staying here in relatively warm Phoenix, AZ, where I really don't even need a sweater most days. -- Watch for my rant come this summer.
Plus it made it harder caring for my infant daughter with my arm in a cast.

ROFLOL! That is the way it is here too!! I Agree with you completely! =)
It was said tonight that the ice/snow would be so bad..Stay at home..My Husband does not have that advantage, he works nights. I just asked him how it was driving home.. He said "Not a snow flake in site, just the moon and the stars" =)
I deleted the first post- it had spelling errors!
so I'm stopping to leave a quick commment
and to wish you lots of Christmas Cheer!
Merry Christmas!
Never thought of snow hyperbole ruining business for restaurants and hotels.
Now here's something: three flakes of snow or one hysterical newscaster running off at the mouth and all the schools are closed for the day. Or if the temperature drops, schools are closed for the day. And the reason is: the students get on the bus dressed as if they were spending the day a malibu or Key West. And if the bus should go off the road or get stuck somewhere, the kids might freeze.
What I want to know is: where are the parents, that would allow kids out on a sub zero morning without hat mittens, boots, and all the other stuff. I mean, they are also tax payers, and it's their money going down the drain too.
My son in law HAS to go to work as he has some court hearings scheduled but hopes to come home early. He COULD take my daughter to work but told her just to stay home. She said he probably doesn't want to hear her screaming during the drive! On the news, it shows trucks sliding all over the roads. He has 4 wheel drive in his new truck so that will help. They have nearly 3 ft drifts in their road.
Nice to hear from Dr Ima and I think she may be right.
I bet you get a lot of snow where you are, Wilhelmine. We have ice under this snowfall too. That's all that was left from our supposed big snowfall last week. That's strange that the kids aren't dressed for the weather. The kids here are going to school in coats, snowpants, boots, gloves, etc.
Have a great gather day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The snow finally stopped here at 4:30. All the nearby schools are closed again for tomorrow.
Some of the neighbors here were talking about global warning today too!
Wilma, I'll be over in a few with a shovel,
save some snow for me! :-)
