My aunt whom we all just got close to again in the last 6 months or so sent my mother a check for a small monetary amount for Christmas.
My mother & I both know my aunt (her sister) is easily offended by what she feels are slights. My kids and I wrote "Thank You" letters for what she send us. And sent a card & photos ect.
My mother also got a card from my aunt 3 days after I got mine.
Today after my mother got home from her bible study, she questions me, if I told my aunt that she is a JW or not. Because the check is dated 12-25-08 and says Merry Christmas on the memo line.
My mother decided she is returning the check to my aunt, because she doesn't celebrate Christmas. And refuses to acknowledge the spirt the check was sent in.
All I can do is shake my head . . . .

To you and yours ...
If Mom didn't want to keep it for her self then she could donate it to someone or group the could use it.
But I can't see offending the giver, on the principle that shedecided to be a JW without telling our entire family.
