It's A Wonderful World, (1946) Starry James Steward at Mr. George Bailey. This is a Christmas classic shown year after year on TV but is also a wonderful DVD, for any Classic film Butt.
Main Cast
James Stewart - George Bailey
Clarence - Henry Travers
George Bailey the all time good and honest guy has gotten into trouble with the bank, He is the savings and loans manager and money is missing. He is distraught, he feels he has nothing left to live for, all is lost and the world would be a much better place without him. On a cold snowy Christmas eve he takes his car and he decides to do himself in. To jump off the bridge and to end his life and leave Bedford Falls forever. He is so discouraged with himself he really sees the world as better off without him. However something strange happens that night. A funny little angel comes down to stop him. Clarence the Angel must convince him to keep on living. If he does, this strange little Angel will finally get his wings.
My thoughts
Who could not love the bumbling little angel Clarence who is not very good at his job and seems more like a grandfather than an angel. He practically pleads with Bailey to give him this one chance to get his wings, it is hardly what you would think heavenly intervention would be like but it is great fun.
The film is similar to The Charles Dickens Classic - A Christmas Carol in that angel shows us the life of our hero. The difference is there is nothing really scary. We do see a world past in George's youth and the future without Bailey and it is not so nice though. Clarence shows him exactly would life in Bedford Falls, now named Pottersville, after George's arch enemy and real thief who took the missing $8,000, and it is not pretty.
Bailey cannot accept what life will turn out for his family and friends without him and that is the clincher. Clarence has convinced him to go home where he belongs.
Bailey stumbles back home to see a house full of people waiting for him, they love him so much that they have come up with the money to help him out.
This movie is a true movie of love and faith, and how nobody, is insignificant in this world. If only would be suicide victims would watch this movie before they make their final decision to take their own life. We do not always know how important we are to other people and how much we have enriched their lives. But this movie sends a clear picture that we do.
