Health books can make great holiday presents—they’re practical, interesting, and helpful. As the Chief Editor of Books at Harvard Health Publications, my job is to help some of the Harvard doctors and other faculty members translate their research into health books.
For example, Dr. Abe Morgentaler is an expert in men’s health. In fact, he is a world-renowned researcher on the hormone testosterone. Dr. Morgentaler has found that many men are deficient in testosterone, and he just released a book from Harvard Health Publications called Testosterone for Life. This health book could make a great holiday gift for your man. Frankly, it’s a gift you can both share—the information from Dr. Morgentaler has an enormous impact not only on men, but also on their spouses or partners. You’ll see Dr. Morgentaler right here on Gather in the coming weeks. He’ll be hosting a live chat.
Another health book that is new from Harvard Health Publications is Your Developing Baby. In this book, the authors, Drs. Peter Doubilet and Carol Benson (a lovely married couple who are both ultrasound radiologists at Harvard), use amazing ultrasound images to show what is going on as your baby develops. This is a great gift not only for the holidays, but any time you know someone who is expecting a child. After all, there are only so many onesies a new mom can use!
Perhaps you know a couple that is trying to have a baby, but it’s taking a long time to conceive. New research shows that diet can influence conception. In The Fertility Diet, Chairman of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard’s School of Public Health, Dr. Walter Willett, teams up with one of his colleagues to explain to women the latest information on how changes in diet may increase the chance of pregnancy.
We also have many health books that are tried and true favorites. Here are two books for families who are going through difficult times:
Living Through Breast Cancer by Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, a Harvard surgeon and breast cancer survivor, is a guide that every woman should have as she navigates this difficult illness.
Raising an Emotionally Healthy Child When a Parent is Sick is a book by two Harvard psychiatrists, Drs. Paula Rauch and Anna Muriel, who have lots of wonderful advice for helping children to thrive during difficult times.
If the holidays stress you out, try reading the Harvard Medical School Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure. And finally, if you plan on making a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and exercise more, but you don’t love the thought of either, then read Dr. Harvey Simon’s The No Sweat Exercise Plan.
You can buy all of these health books at your local bookstore or online at Amazon or BarnesandNoble.com.
We will have more health books coming out in the future, but the topics are a secret for now. Keep reading this blog, and I’ll tell you more about them! In the meantime, consider these truly helpful holiday gifts that won’t bust your budget. Have a peaceful December.
Do you like getting new books as gifts? What do you think Harvard Medical School should publish books on in the future?
Julie K. Silver, M.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School. She is also the Chief Editor of Books for Harvard Health Publications.
