In the Hole!

Perhaps fatigue or stress had cramped my style
But I was wilting, flaccid, losing nerve,
Frustrated with myself as all the while
My eager partner rued my lack of verve.
Try as I might my timing was inept,
Each clumsy stroke destined to miss the spot.
So this was impotence. I could have wept.
My confidence had gone, I'd lost the plot.
But then my partner took me by surprise
And with that blow my pounding blood was up,
As straining to suppress ecstatic cries
We watched our ball pitch straight into the cup.
Throughout life's course there is no greater goal
Than to finish with a flourish in the hole.

The whole thing's so much fun, but I absolutely love your last line best of all -- "than to finish with a flourish in the hole" -- beautiful alliteration, and those double sh's are exquisite! "Form over function" may say the exact opposite of this poem's object lesson, but your use of the sonnet makes a very good argument for form! ;)
