Barbara Walters names Obama most fascinating person in 2008????

Really???????????  My husband predicted that she would name him the most fascinating person on the show tonight "The 10 most Fascinating People in 2008".  Personally, I can think of people that are much more fascinating than him.  Some of the other people she named as most fascinating people of 2008 are Miley Cyrus, Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Tina Fey, and Rush Limbaugh.  I don't know...some of the people she named as fascinating just don't, well, just don't fascinate me.  I guess it is all in what you are interested in, but I just don't find Miley Cyrus all that fascinating either.  Again, just my opinion.

Did anyone else see this show? What are your thoughts??

Wow...I did not see it, but that IS a very strange list...not many of them are fascinating, at all, most esp. Miley Cyrus and Tom Cruise?!?!?!?

Something that I find "fascinating" is the fact that, if you look up the word "fascinate" in the dictionary, it says the word originally meant "to bewitch or cast a spell on someone"...............

I saw the previews of who the 'fascinating' people were...and wasn't fascinated by any of them, so I didn't bother watching something I'd be bored with...just like the people who made her list. *YAWN!!!* As for Obama being MOST fascinating...totally off base. Sorry, Babs...you struck out on the whole list; especially the top spot.

I didn't watch the show, but I feel like you do - none of those people really fascinate me! what fascinates me is how they manage to get so many people so totally enthralled with them! I mean, Tom Cruise? Hasn't he managed to make just about every woman in America mad with his interviews? I know he's good looking, but that isn't enough to fascinate me! LOL

I'll bet if you wrote down the ten people who fascinated you the most this past year, I probably would agree with you either. We are all entitled to an opinion. Just because yours differs from Ms. Walters doesn't make her wrong, it just makes her opion different. People magazine named Hugh Jackman the sexist man alive... personally, i agree that he is sexy but I married the sexiest and most fascinating man alive... (in my opinion)

I think one of her reasons for this show is to highlight social changes, and use an individual to represent them. Obama does qualify, in that regard, because of some of the historic aspects to his ancestry and the presidency. Miley Cyrus probably was named because she went from Hannah Montana to Myley Cyrus before the public without too many black eyes.

I don't always agree with Walter's lists, but she does make choices that are interesting for conversation's sake.

She read off some that made her list a few years ago...............lots of one splash wonders. Nobody even remembered who they were.
She looks at things from a different perspective than we do.
Too bad she didn't name Elizabeth Hasslebeck so she would be forgotten soon too.

I watched part of it. I knew Obama would be her most fascinating pick. I can see him as making the list and I do like Will Smith. Tom Cruise? I don't get her choices. Tina Fey was okay but she was only picked because of her Palin impersonations.

maybe at 100 years old it doesn't take too much to fascinate Barbara anymore.......I can see only 2 people on her list that even remotely were interesting...fascinating???

I don't find Miley Cyrus interesting much less fascinating.

I think Tom Cruise (who I hate to admit I have liked several of his movies despite his being in them) is a poster boy for anti-psychotics, ok maybe something less strong but still...

In this year I find Obama to be pretty darn fascinating more so than any of the others listed. Most of them are just personalities, famous for entertaining sort of thing.

Obama is leagues beyond that. Like the title or not he is the Presidnet Elect and you can't ignore that he will be the first african american to be in this position. That really is huge, but not why he won. He won because he is smart, not just regular but like, WOW smart. And through it all he maintained his composure. He won without attacking at a personal level, without smears and that hideous hateful behavior.

I guess when it comes down to it it isn't who WE find most fascinating but who SHE finds most fascinating. In this case if she picked President Elect Obama then I agree with that choice.

I didn't find her list that great and I did think that she was going to pick Obama. I didn't bother to watch it
Of course she picked him. If you don't play the game, you don't get the interviews.

I think lists like that are a product. I suspect sophisticated market research metrics behind the curtain. I'm not in the target demographic. Much as I like Barack Obama, and it's quite a bit so far, I don't find him fascinating.

I'd like to say I'm the most fascinating amphibian on Gather but Madame Donna C. is formidable competition.

I have no idea how ABC or Baba Wawa comprised the list, but while some of the others on the list were not very interesting to me, I can certainly see Barack Obama being the most fascinating. I mean, the first African-American President-elect? This is a huge step forward for our entire country and it took someone very special to have done what he did.
