Here's Cocoa- the dog we might be adopting

Here are a few pictures that were emailed to us of Cocoa, the dog we are thinking of adopting.  I'm not sure what the prominent breed would be with that wrinkled face. Anyone have any ideas?

Looks like he has some American Bulldog or Mastiff in him. He is adorable!!!!

The face looks like a Sharpei however not sure... after examining the way the body looks , there are no wrinkles it could be a mix. A good friend had a sharpei and her dog had serious health issues due to the drooping skin around the eyes. Research and find out in case this is the situation. It is a darling dog though and good luck if adopting :)

It easily could be Shar Pei. In any case, dogs with wrinkled eyes are very susceptible to eye infections because of buildup of eye stuff. Be on the alert.

He is adorable! What a sweet face! How could you not take him?
I'm fairly certain he's a mix of some sort. Nick's uncle has always been an 'underdog' kind of guy. He doesn't typically adopt pure breed dogs of any sort. Since this one was one he took on from a family, I would guess it was a 'mutt' of some sort.

I definitely think he has bulldog and probably Sharpei. Both breeds have sensitive and dry skin. The get hotspots if in the sun to long. Also have to watch what shapoos and stuff you use on them. We use an oatmeal shampoo on our bulldog. She is also allergic to ragweed and fresh cut grass. The vet said this is common in dogs from the Mastiff family.

There is definitely Shar pei. What color is his tongue? If there is blue or purple on the tongue that would mean it either has Shar pei or Chow in it. They are the only two breeds with tongues like that.

This dog looks like she has a great personality and is very rugged and strong looking - probably love to go for long walks and run around the country! Where are you adopting her from? All my animals were strays found in deplorable condition physically or adopted...

I don't think he looks Shar Pei at all. My family loves Shar Pei's. I too would guess he's got some Bulldog in him.

He's beautiful either way! I love the all American Mutt, same breed as my family hahaha.

Have you had any time to spend with him with your children to see how he behaves? We tried to adopt a beautiful dog once, great personality, only problem was he was as hyper as my kids are LOL. He was pretty big, and the kids would go and get him all riled up, he thought it was great fun, they were all being hyper together, but then he'd get too hyper and knock them down.

We wound up finding another family for him because the kids were getting hurt... they wanted to play with him, he wanted to play back haha, and BAM, someone wound up crying.

We're adopting him from Nick's godfather (whom he calls "Uncle"). He's 6 years old, and weighs around 70 pounds. We've never been around him at all, but if we do decide to adopt him, I want to visit him first. After that, Nick's uncle has said that if it does not work out, he'll welcome him back without a problem.

He's been around both kids and cats, and isn't too hyper, but is playful.
We have a large yard, but we also have a smaller portion that is fenced in. I'm not sure if we would keep him outside for long periods of time- he'd be an indoor dog for sleeping, and what not, but would be going outside to play, take walks, and go to the bathroom.

He looks like a mastiff a friend used to have. Gentle giants! The only thing I don't like about mastiffs is the drool. YUCK!

I'll admit, I'm kinda torn on this. I mean, my uncle takes great care of his dogs and I trust the guy - it's really a win-win. Free dog, free vet visits and updates every year, housebroken, etc. This is the only one of his dogs I never met - and I loved his old ones. The bum even compared this one to my favorite of his dogs, LOL. The fact that he'd take the dog back too if it didn't work out is nice.

Downsides however, mostly involve drool and kitties. Not sure i want a lot of slobber - might not be an issue with this dog, but it seems like it could be. Also, our kitties. I lubs our kitties - they are very affectionate and playful. I worry however, that they might go into hiding, but a bit more skittish and less adoring if they get jealous/feel threatened by the new house member. Additionally, when kitties get playful, things like flat screen tv's don't get knocked over. When 70 pound dogs get playful...

So, I'm really torn. I know Heather's been wanting a dog, and this seems like a great way to get a very nice one at little cost. But, there are certain things about our current situation I really like as well, and am concerned that Cocoa could prove an unsettling element to it all.

I would say go for it. The pros outway the cons, and the fact that hes coming from someone you know and trust, and that if things dont work out, you can take him back, are good things. Its a must better scenario than getting a dog from a stranger.
