St. Louis City Leader tells people to arm themselves

I am armed, and according to a city leader of St. Louis, he is telling his people to arm themselves.  The reason is that with the economy on a slide, crime is up, and the police can't handle the load.
What do you think?
When I lived in Massachusetts, I was told no guns.  I got robbed.  I wanted to shoot, but didn't so I just had to be a victim.  I moved back to Oklahoma.  I got robbed.  I pulled out my gun and the robbers left.  It's tough to rob someone who has a loaded gun pointed at your face.
How do you feel about this?

When working, driving cross this great nation, I can't carry a firearm. I carry a cartridge of pepper spray, a pink buck knife, a billy club, and this chair leg, about 2 1/2 feet long as protection. I had considered on of those lazer things the police use, but I haven't gotten that brave yet.
I do know that our area is giving free concealed weapon classes, I have given that some thought.

i do not have a gun, i do not want one, i got robbed before (at knife point), i gave them what they wanted and i am still alive, i dont even know how to use a gun. We live in a pretty save neighbor hood, but going South we have lots of crime, murder and so on, but i would still not take a gun...

Hello Carol. I can't believe the amount of crime being committed on a daily basis here in the United States.

I just finished reading my local paper and was astonished to read that there was a home invasion in our township. There is also a rash of bank robberies and other crimes.

I've never owned a gun and wouldn't know where to begin in getting one. I really don't want one, but don't want to feel unprotected.

I truly hope that the economy turns around and we see a dramatic decrease in crime. It's so sad that so many people have no morals.

The economy & the upcoming holiday will flare up the crime rate.

I don't own a gun.
I don't even know how to use one.
And, to be honest, I don't want to know.
But, I believe that everyone has the right to defend themselves.

i don't own a gun, but i should. I live in an area that had little to no crime, now it's not that way. the other day there was a shooting down the road, my car has been broken into. i don't know if i could shoot it and actually hit what i am aiming at, my aim is not the world's best

We have guns. We also have a rule in the city of Kennesaw that says every household is to own a gun. It's not like the police go door to door to enforce it or anything, but the city has the lowest crime rate in the state. Who's going to break in to a house if there is a great chance the owner will have a gun.

I would use ours if someone broke in to my house and threatened my family.

Wow! What a world we live in!
I don't love guns. But I support our right in this country to bear arms. I only wish we didn't need them. Of course, I wish a lot of other things, too.
What really freaks me out is the alderman as good as telling you guys that it's "every man for himself". Crazy!

People arming themselves is nothing new. I am not a gun enthusiast but don't condemn those who are. Many times guns are used against the person of family they were meant to protect. Too many young ones around me to feel safe with a gun around.
let me just say that the constitution allows for gun ownership and I support this whole-heartedly Carol.............

when a state outlaws gun ownership, they make victims of their citizens and when they are given the right back, the crime rates go down very fast......

I have a carry permit and choose not to be a victum of some punk too lazy to work.
The police have never had the manpower to protect everyone all the time, it is up to us.

A word of advice. If you are not willing to use it don't carry

Although I portray myself a cowboy; I am not armed. I am not armed for a very simple reason: I would use it - and it may not be in self-defense. I shot someone in the foot one day (not no Cheney-like hunting accident), took a long time to get over it.

The rest of you should take delight in the fact I am not armed.

I have ZERO interest in owning a gun. I am sorry, but I refuse to accept that we live in the kind of world where we need to carry or even own a weapon to survive. I would move if someone on my city council suggested that.

In Texas we have the right to own a gun. We also have the right to get a license to carry a concealed weapon. There have been so many robberies where they kick the front door in. It happened to a friend of mine when she wasn't home, but her teen son was. He was dragged around the house with a gun pointed at his head while they robbed the house. It's a personal decision. When I was a child my father was working for the sheriff's department and I was taught from a young age how to handle, fire and clean the gun. I never picked the gun up out of curiosity because I knew it was meant for. My teen is scared of them because I haven't taught her to respect the weapons and what they are meant for. That's about to change. Even if she doesn't want to have one when she's older, she can take a class.

LOL Doc, my step-father had a house like yours! In that house were kids and did any of us pick those weapons up? NOPE

We knew what they were meant for.
